    We're up to the daunting letter "Q." Our forward progress was stopped at your posting of "Prepare Ye (from Godspell, not from the artist formerly known as Kanye)."

    many decades ago, I attended a retreat with fellow confirmation class kids at the local Episcopal church attended by youth leaders and a couple Episcopal priests. We had a debate-after listening to the respective records-what was a more accurate reflection of the new testament or gospel-Godspell or Jesus Christ Superstar. The elders all said Godspell and I said who cares? JCS had Ian Gillan and that alone made it a better record since he was the Mark 2 lead singer for Deep Purple (replacing Rod Evans) Everyone ultimately agreed that the actual performance by Gillan, Murray Head etc was superior and it got more play time as a result

    That's an interesting topic for debate, for a religious retreat (which I've never been on, so I wouldn't know what to expect; I've had a girl tell me, though, that on one of their retreats, they gave massages to each individual, by the entirety of the group). I've never listened to the Godspell soundtrack, though I've seen part of the film, on t.v. It probably would would have been more powerful, had I seen a live performance. I do like the song "Prepare Ye," though (I've heard a good version, back in high school, by the school chorus). But JC Superstar has better music, I think. For a while, the film soundtrack was my favorite album. I still know it by heart. Very powerful. I've only heard little of the version that was brought to the stage, with all the rock stars in it, which didn't sound up to the same musical standard.

    You know, fairly recently, there was a television production of this, along the same lines, with John Legend, playing the role of Jesus. It all just felt too profane, to me; more about the singers-- whose performances felt more stylized, than moving-- than about the story.

    My first, full exposure to the show, had been at a church production, near the high school, cast with many students (I'd been invited by a female classmate, who was involved in the staging of it). It completely blew me away.

    I just went fishing, and found this, for "Q." It's actually pretty cool. It is in Spanish, so I can't really follow the lyrics, but the title, appropriate of the last couple of posts, translates as "Who do you believe?

    ¿Quien Tu Crees?

    Once, reciting these lyrics for a young friend, her reaction was that they seemed rather depressing. So, hopefully this will not be too downbeat of a way to start off, the new cycle. But I don't think of the song, that way. Its title is honestly "Pale Blue," in English, but that phrase is usually sung in Spanish, during the song, and is what the rest of the song is built around, so I am going to use that, for this Toad the Wet Sprocket tune:

    Azul Palido

    Azul palido, as death it waits for me:
    After storms and after pouring rain,
    Weakest thunder, pale Blue remains.

    Azul palido, as death, it follows me;
    Mocking weather-- an attempt in vain;
    Weakest thunder-- laughing at the rain.

    Azul palido, as death it comforts me:
    After storms and, after pouring rain,
    Crashing thunder, pale Blue remains.

    I didn't find it depressing at all.
