    Because nature abhors a vacuum.

A power vacuum most of all.

It is completely contrary to basic military strategy. It is putting an essentially defenseless American unit in the middle of hostilities and then depending on both sides to not to attack them. The problem arises when the decision has to be made where they will put their priority and you can count on that priority not being the US forces.

Trump: Kurds Didn't Help Us With Normandy

"“The Kurds are fighting for their land, just so you understand, they’re fighting for their land,” Trump said at a White House event on Wednesday. “And as somebody wrote in a very, very powerful article today, they didn’t help us in the Second World War, they didn’t help us with Normandy, as an example, they mention names of different battles. But they’re there to help us with their land.”"

Do you really think the American people are ready to commit more forces? The US is getting tired of war and the military is getting tired of fighting it. For a long time, we have heard the clamor that the US is not the world's policeman. I am not sure that was the right way to do it, but I certainly understand it.

I don't even see that as the issue here.

Trump flipped on our allies on the day of battle - without even consulting our military!

In announcing this, Trump even pointed out his two big beautiful hotels in Turkey, the country that is attacking our allies!!

What the HELL happened to America?

I have no idea. You seemed to be. Did you change your mind?

Absolutely besides the point. We have non-fighting military forces all over the world. Why would this be different? Don't bother to answer.... as I said... besides the point.

How many more years should we stay there.
From what I have seen, the military generally likes Trump.

We had 500,000 soldiers in Western Europe at the height of the Cold War, as a tripwire. Not enough to defeat the Warsaw Pact, but enough to make sure the U.S. would mobilize far larger numbers and strike back were those 500,000 to be attacked.
    Same principle.

I haven't changed my mind. There are situations where there are no good or right answer. This is one. I would like to see the military completely out. However, I also hate to see the Kurds left defenseless.

We have military all over the world, but they are not in the middle of a shooting war. I have lost too many friends and acquaintances over the years. I am tired of seeing our people killed just because we have taken on the responsibility.

The American people are always tired of war. The military is always tired of any war that lasts more than 6 months (or less).

Remember World War Two? That great and glorious "last good war" that supposedly every American supported and every American man clamored to be a part of?

    All BS.

By 1944 the bulk of the American people were extremely weary of the conflict and wanted it ended.

And the American military? Our military wants to fight wars like the U.S. government conducts the census. 9 and a half years of preparation and 6 months of fighting.

Think again. He's a draft dodger who mocked war heroes and families of the fallen.

Actually from the 1960s onward is was about 330,000 soldiers in Europe. 220,000 in West Germany, 80,000 in Britain and the rest spread among the other NATO nations.

Do you understand how the deaths of those people have helped American influence around the world?

I get it but it can't really be related. Yes, people were growing weary of it but support of it at the beginning was virtually total. And congress declared war. There really is no comparing the two.

Even though, I was in the Air Force, I served three years in Heidelberg in HQ USAREUR/7th Army in the late 1960s. . Basically, they were the US Army part of NATO. The armored cavalry unit which was tasked to defend the Fulda Gap was calculated to be wiped out in a matter of hours giving just enough time to bring in more US and other NATO forces. We really don't want to go back to that mode.

I'm not so sure that they are more approving than the general public:
    https://www.stripes.com/news/vetera...-some-question-his-military-judgment-1.598182

And, there is is real doubt on issues like whether Trump listens to the military and whether he can be trusted with our nuclear weapons.

Plus, one could imagine that this flip flop on our allies and our troops fighting with them will make a difference - especially since whether Trump listens to our military is an issue.

There may not be a "right" answer... but there is definitely a "wrong" answer. And Trump always seems to find it..
