Ok so the server at my company got hit with what is called a trojanransom virus. The virus encrypts certain files and then creates a key that can be used to un-encrypt them. The virus creator then holds the key ransom and will only give it to you if you pay them for it. Of course we didn't pay them anything but all the encrypted files were lost. We had most everything backed up so that wasn't that big of a deal but now when I try to create a new file in Illustrator CS6 I get this message: The file "print.ai" is in an unknown format and cannot be opened.

The thing is I found the print.ai file and it seems fine. If I double click it-it opens a new document in Illustrator so it doesn't appear to be encrypted or anything. We did a re-install but it didn't help.

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?

    I found this, though not sure if it will help;

Using Illustrator's content recovery mode, remove the malformed binary data entries.

Enable the content recovery mode, then run the recovery on the files to covert them to a format that can be modified in a text editor. A complete explanation is available in How to enable content recovery mode in Illustrator CS2 or later.

Open the recovered copy of the file in a plain text editor such as TextEdit (Mac OS) or Word Pad (Windows). Use a more traditional word-processing application and save the file as plain text without allowing a hidden .txt extension to be added.

    Search for the following string:

    %_/Binary: /ASCII85Decode

This string is followed with text that includes a tilde followed with a greater-than sign:
    ~>

The subsequent line is in the form of:

    %_; (hItem) ,

where hItem can be some different dictionary key name.
Select the text beginning with "%_/Binary" through and including "%_; (hItem) ,"
    Delete the selected text.
Repeat the search to find additional instances, and if found, repeat the deletion.
    Save the file.
Open the file in Illustrator, and choose File > Save As and save with a new name.
    Close the file.

Note: This last step is necessary.
