The English word of Journey Man comes from a time, were certified craftsmen had to go onto a 3 year journey to gain as much experience as possible. In German that craftsmen is called Geselle and the journey is called Walz. There are very strict rules, for example, for 3 years you cannot get closer then 100Km to your home town, dress rules, work rules and so on. This is how knowledge of the trades were spread around and how large projects could be built. One needed the journeyman time to become a master.

In my trade Gesellen were send to other traders, they did not walk, but used the Coach.
I am by now a Master of Im and Export and Whole Sale and Manufacturing. I did not have to go on the Walz for my Master. As a Geselle I had the right, by providing that I had gained the professional experience through my own companies to apply.
In my case, since I was abroad, my Master was about, how this type of schooling, Geselle, gave me an advantage and made it possible to create my companies in a foreign country. In the End it was a showcase of the width and quality of education I had received as a rather young person. So one day I packet my suitcase and flew to Germany. First thing I had to do, buy a proper German Business Suite.
Dark Blue, white shirt, dark blue tie, black shoes and black socks and that white hanky for the pocket, hair cut and shave.
Never put that one on again, 1000 DM for a one time affair and a 3 hours grill by the Masters. It was a little different, compared to when I made my Geselle, then I was considered a child or maybe a teen, a nobody, not jet 18.
It turned out to be more a discussion, were I had to present my case. I was a pro, they were pros. In the end it was more about my business live a friendly exchange.
My Geselle was average by the grades. My Master got a excellent. So my Walz 10,000 kilometers away worked out, so to speak.
I did my Master out of pride. Pride of what I had accomplished, 10,000 kilometers away. It did not gain me anything.
But it gave me a sense of accomplishment, achievement, it was more a intellectual challenge, something that broke the rat race.
