For the last few years, a phenomena affectionately dubbed 'the hum', has made its appearance around the world allegedly. A lot of videos surfaced on youtube during the 2012 nonsense and I disregarded it as a hoax. However, I recently came across a news clip showing South Jersey residents reporting it. Footage from a liquor store show the windows shaking from the sound at the same time along with the clerk's reaction (Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOtOqmgAn08 ). The USGS has said it had no correspondence with seismic activity. I've been looking at the other videos to compare sound and noticeable effects on the environment to see if it really wasn't just an isolated incident that spooked Jersey residents into relating it to a hoaxed event. A German video has a similar sound and is accompanied by car alarms, presumably by the vibration ( Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNql-wSfM0A ). Considering the 'sound' has been reported in such large numbers during each occurrence globally, it caught my eye despite my initial dismissal. Any thoughts as to what it is? Thanks!

Interesting. If not a hoax, I wonder if it could possibly be freak superpositions of the prevailing, convergent compressions and rarefactions (expansions) in the air from all of the lower level pressure wave sources present at that time and place. That would roughly correspond to the longitudinal wave equivalence of freak rogue waves that sometimes spontaneously occur in the oceans??? Just a wild-ass guess...

In plate tectonics and other systems in Earth, just as we feel and/or sense earthquakes, why aren't we 'hearing' something as well?
