Andrew Jackson was indeed a Southern Democrat from Tennessee at a time when the Southern Democrats represented the social conservative ideology of White (WASP) Male Supremacy in the United States. That connection between the social conservative ideology of White (WASP) Male Supremacy and Southern Democrats endured until the adoption of a social liberal ideology under the Democratic presidential administrations that really stated with Truman's integration of the US military, then JFK, LBJ, and finally Jimmy Carter. The social conservative ideology of White (WASP) Male Supremacists of the Southern Democrats, with it's links to the KKK, started abandoning the Democratic Party in about 1980 as reflected by the huge support for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984, We also saw the "Moral Majority" emerge in the Republican Party at this time as well as the "social conservative right-wing" as the former Southern (racist) Democrats began to expand their influence in the Republican Party and that influence was not limited to just the Southern States but spread nationwide.

Imposing Christianity as the National Religion, and idea that was proposed and that the founders rejected, inherently destroys the US Constitution and creates a Christian theocracy.

I would replace the underlined words above, "Independents and Democrats", with "all of us that believe in the American political ideology of a secular nation where all people are created equal and obviously every person that has served in the US military that swore the oath to defend the US constitution from all enemies both foreign and domestic" because we're the people that have to stand in the way of the desire of some, overwhelmingly Republicans, to establish Christianity as the official religion of the United States.

This threat against the US Constitution is also represented by other polls such as this Gallup poll from 2011.

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/148427/Say-Bible-Literally.aspx

This has scary implications because those that believe the Bible is the literal word of God also believe that "God's laws" are superior to "Man's laws" and that creates the situation where many believe the Bible is the Supreme Law of the land and that it overrides the authority of the US Constitution. We're even seeing that today as those like Kim Davis, a county clerk, has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples based upon her Christian religious beliefs in defiance of the US Constitution's equal protection clause in the 14th Amendment.

Kim Davis' actions are based upon her belief that "God's Law" is superior to Constitutional Law and she has a lot of Republicans supporting that very belief today in the United States. All over the country we have Republican politician that want "exceptions" to the Constitution based upon Christian beliefs where the actions of the Christians that would comply with the Constitution are opposed by "God's Laws" in the Bible.

Sorry Christians (and Republicans) but if your actions based upon your religious beliefs violate the Constitutional Rights of another person it's time to dump the Bible and pick up the Constitution because the US Constitution is the US Supreme Law of the Land.

recognizing Christianity as the religion of preference in the US has as much effect of making it a "national religion" as recognizing the palm tree in FL has on the behavior of people in FL. I don't endorse the idea because I know what the constitution says, but those ignorant people who polled on the question might not understand how the response was going to be twisted.

It is not even a matter of Religion, it is about People wanting to impose their will on others and using Religion as a device to that end.

If you really follow Christian teachings, Jesus, taught that his Kingdom was no part of this World, a true separation of Church & State.

The People that want to control other People's lives twist and cherry pick Bible and Scripture in order to accomplish that warped false Agenda.

Again, you cant say the people who answered affirmative to having the government recognize Christianity as preferred religion of America means they also want to impose Christian beliefs on to everyone. Even as a Christian, I don't believe the government should do such a thing, and we should take "In God we Trust" off the currency.

While I'll agree that the Republicans that took part in the study were ignorant the response wasn't really twisted.

    Think about this fact.

From the date of inception the national motto of the United States was E Pluribus Unum. "From Many, One" and it was all inclusive of the American people. It didn't matter what a person's heritage was, their ethnic background, their race, their gender, regardless of whether they were a citizen or non-citizen living in the United States, or whether they believed in god or not. No matter who the person was, where they came from or what they believed in their personal lives were all united as "one" under the political ideology of the United States It was all inclusive.

In the 1950's the US was in a cold war with the tyrannical government of Joseph Stalin in the USSR. The tyranny of the USSR, juxtaposed to the liberty advocated in America, place our two countries at opposite ends of the spectrum. But for the "Christians" that had control of our government it wasn't the tyranny they placed at the pinnacle of importance in their concern. It was the fact that the USSR was based upon atheism as opposed to any religious beliefs. With their power in Congress the "Christians" formally changed the Motto of the United States to "In God We Trust" which is non-inclusive and instead is nefariously exclusive because anyone that doesn't believe in god is left outside of the umbrella of our National Motto.

Based upon recent studies over 45 million Americans are not represented by our "official" national motto of "In God We Trust" because they don't believe in god at all. Yes, the "Christians" are extremely ignorant because they fail to recognize how harmful to the United States the changing of or national motto from the all inclusive "E Pluribus Unum" to nefariously exclusive national motto of "In God We Trust" that excludes 45 million Americans really was.

As it is 57% of Republicans want to continue the destruction of America by establishing Christianity as the national religion. With Christianity representing roughly 70% of the people this would disparage roughly 90-100 million Americans that are not Christians in America.

America is based upon "All people" and not just "Christian" people living here and these continuous attempt by Christians to impose their religion upon all others, or to disparage those that aren't Christians is highly harmful to the American political ideology and only a very ignorant person would fail to understand that fact but it's even worse than that.

Those that are advocating this are really the WASP's in the Republican Party and, as social conservatives, they're seeking to restore the declining power of WASP Supremacy in the United States and that's both religiously intolerant and a racist ideology that has been the most harmful problem in America since our nation was founded. It was WASP Supremacy that retained slavery when the United States came into existence. It was WASP Supremacy that violated the rights of minorities and continues to violate the rights of minorities in America today.

Yes, a person has to be very ignorant to not understand how harmful the Christians have actually been to America in preventing us from moving forward to someday achieve the secular ideology upon which America was founded.
