No they weren't .....the Dems were always about big Govt. The GOP has always been the party of conservatism...which mean a belief in the US Constitution. The Dems have always been the anti-Constitution party.

The RIGHT in America...ie the Repbulians doesn't believe in those things. They were always tools the Dems used to maintain power. They use similar tools and support similar things today. It's far less about race today, but it never was really about race...it was always about power.

No they were Southern Dems...they opposed the Constitution, hence why they were not called Conservatives or were members of the GOP. You confuse the word conservative, with Conservative.

Daggdag said: And the Dems were the far right, conservative party at that time. When the KKK was created, the Republicans were considered the liberal party.

And the OP cleared stated that the RIGHT believed in those things, not the Republicans.
The southern Dems from Jefferson and Jackson until the 1940s (some of them) were always about small government and limiting human rights.

So... if you lived 200 years ago, (your spirit speaking now) you would have a complaint? But if you are 200 years old, you have to admit that vast progress and improvements have been made steadily.
Which is it? Are you electing to hang people today for what may have happened long before they were born, and is totally detached from who those people are now>

That seems to be the democratic way these days. I can just imagine how that picture will be seen by future generations.

The modern Dem Party started under Jackson. Jackson's philosphy and his actions clashed quite a bit.....as is true often with today's modern DNC.

European conservatives like UKIP and Lepenn aren't conservatives at all they are socialist who wish to limit social programs to those born in the country. There economic policies which you can find at there website scarcely differ at all from the rest of the various socialist groups that dominate European politics.

and they still belong to the DNC and continued to do so. The DNC is full of conservatives, that hold on to the odd and old belief that Republicanism and the ideas found in the US Constitution which we were founded on are wrong. Power, is all the Dems and centralized Govt is their goal

They were conservatives first and Dems second. When the Dems wen liberal, their conservatives in the South went to the GOP.

The numbers and percentages have been produced regularly over the years on this Board, and if you don't know or remember what they are, then I stipulate you are not doing your due diligence.

Try again the ones I've seen prove you wrong. The number in question that I've have only shown that a slightly higher percentage of southern democrats than southern REpublicans voted in favor but that's almost entirely because there were so few southern Republicans in congress at the time.

You have provided nothing that proves me wrong. Not a thing. Greater numbers and percentages of Northern and Western democrat senators and representatives voted for civil rights than the Republican counterparts in 1964 and 1965.

Did you know the GOP senators and representatives voted UNANIMOUSLY against the civil rights and voting acts. The southern Democrats from the 1830 to the early 1960s were overwhelmingly conservatives, for small government, less taxes, and no civil rights.
