Judge sets July 18 for Bannon ‘contempt of Congress’ trial

President Donald Trump’s former adviser Steve Bannon will go to trial July 18 on criminal charges that he defied a subpoena from the House committee exploring the causes of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and Donald Trump’s attempt to subvert the 2020 election, a judge ordered Tuesday.

Judge Carl Nichols set the mid-summer schedule after Bannon’s lawyers and Justice Department attorneys wrangled over how quickly the contempt of Congress case should move.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2021/12/07/july-18-bannon-contempt-of-congress-trial-523885

It's disheartening to see how slowly the wheels of justice turn. In this case especially so since Bannon's game plan is to run out the clock on the Dem's control of Congress. Cuz if the Repubs take over the House the last thing they'll want to do is pursue the Jan. 6 investigation.

    Gotta burn all the witches.

“Without really analyzing it, I grew up in Massachusetts, so the Salem witch trials were always something that I was around. The average kindergartner probably doesn't know about it, except that in Massachusetts, you do, because they'll take you on field trips to see reenactments and stuff.” Rob Zombie

Is it even possible to obstruct political witch hunters?

“And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know that I can do it.” Abigail Adams

    Wow, what a stretch.

With the first trials connected to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol set to begin early next year, defense lawyers have started in earnest to road test strategies for defeating the government’s charges.

Some, in the most complicated cases, will most likely challenge the allegation that an organized conspiracy to storm the building predated any violence. Others, looking to offload the blame their clients face, may contend that they were authorized by President Donald J. Trump to take part in the attack.

But one group of lawyers representing those accused of assaulting the police is planning to make a more audacious — and more difficult — legal claim: They say they intend to argue that the officers themselves used excessive force on Jan. 6 and that their clients merely responded, acting in defense of other people or in their own defense.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/12/08/us/politics/jan-6-riot-police-brutality-defense.html

In many if not most instances the rioters are lucky they weren't shot.

Thompson Details Materials Obtained By Jan. 6 Committee Including Alleged November Plotting By Meadows

The Jan. 6 select committee on Tuesday informed former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’ lawyer that it has been “left with no choice” but to advance contempt proceedings against his client, after the panel warned that the former Trump official would be referred for contempt if he failed to show up for his deposition.

In the committee’s letter dated Tuesday, chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) also detailed the materials that Meadows has offered up thus far during his short-lived stint of engaging with the committee, which, Thompson said, include communications documenting an early White House effort to push for the appointment of “alternate slates of electors” on the day networks called Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

Among the text messages that Meadows handed over, according to Thompson, was a Nov. 6 message from an unnamed member of Congress who texted Meadows about appointing alternate slates of electors in certain states. The lawmaker, Thompson said, acknowledged that doing so would be “highly controversial” — to which Meadows allegedly replied “I love it.”

Meadows' refusal to cooperate makes sense in the context of his involvement in what by all appearances looks like an illegal conspiracy to defraud the American electorate.

Partisan political propaganda is not news.

NYT = MSM = Fake News

"Abramson, who served as the top news editor from 2011 until her firing in 2014, made the remarks, which included criticism of current Executive Editor Dean Baquet, in her new book, "Merchants of Truth."

“Though Baquet said publicly he didn’t want the Times to be the opposition party, his news pages were unmistakably anti-Trump,” Abramson wrote in the book, which is set for release on Jan. 19. “Some headlines contained raw opinion, as did some of the stories that were labeled as news analysis.”

    How so?

In the letter, Thompson outlined some of the documents that Trump’s former chief of staff has already provided to the committee, including a Nov. 7, 2020, email “discussing the appointment of alternate slates of electors as part of a ‘direct and collateral attack’ after the election.” Also mentioned in the letter is a Jan. 5 email “regarding a 38-page PowerPoint briefing titled ‘Election Fraud, Foreign Interference & Options for 6 JAN’ that was to be provided ‘on the hill’ ” and a Jan. 5 “email about having the National Guard on standby.”

Meadows provided the committee last week with “certain relevant messages” from “saved and backed up phone data” from his personal cellphone, according to Thompson’s letter. The text messages produced by Meadows include a Nov. 6, 2020, correspondence “with a Member of Congress apparently about appointing alternate electors in certain states as part of a plan that the Member acknowledged would be ‘highly controversial’ and to which Mr. Meadows apparently said, ‘I love it.’ ”

Also included in the texts produced by Meadows, the letter said, are messages about “the need for the former President to issue a public statement that could have stopped the January 6th attack on the Capitol” and an early-January 2021 text message exchange “between Mr. Meadows and an organizer of the January 6th rally on the Ellipse.”

You understand they have a copy of the letter sent by Thompson, the one they are quoting excerpts from, right? Denial of the facts really isn't a winning strategy. Surely you know that by now.

The Washington Post is a political propaganda house organ for our corrupt political establishment.

WaPo = MSM = Fake News Wapo is not a credible source for news.
Every report consistent with the MSM's obvious bias should be presumed false.

    “January 22: The Trump-Comey Bromance
On January 22, shortly after President Trump took office, author Richard Hine tweeted out a short video that he claimed showed Trump “literally [blowing] a kiss to James Comey at a WH reception for law enforcement.” Hine’s tweet was retweeted nearly 10,000 times. The media, naturally, glommed into it.

Among the media boosters of this story: ThinkProgress’s Judd Legum (retweeted nearly 1,600 times), The New Republic’s Jeet Heer (657 retweets), the Washington Post’s Gene Weingarten, the New Yorker’s Ben Taub, Slate’s Mark Joseph Stern, Vox’s Matt Yglesias, GQ’s Keith Olbermann (retweeted nearly 1,100 times), ThinkProgress’s Ian Millhiser, and many others. The news outlets that ran with this story, meanwhile, included HuffPost, Raw Story, The Week and others.

Unfortunately for all of the credulous media figures who took this story to press (or to tweet), it wasn’t true: audio of the exchange clearly shows Trump is not blowing a kiss to Comey, but rather saying his name. But a good, juicy fake news story is hard to quash: months after this fake news died down, the Washington Post’s Jenna Johnson reported on it as if it were credible.”
THE FEDERALIST, 13 More Major Fake News Stories In Just Five Months Of Trump’s Presidency, With Donald Trump in the White House, the media is increasingly apathetic towards, if not antipathetic to, the truth.

Just paste up an authenticated copy of the letter, and we can discuss it.

Again, WaPo is not a credible source.

"ATLANTA — In a story January 9, 2021, about a phone call between then-President Donald Trump and a lead Georgia elections investigator, The Associated Press, based on information provided by a source, erroneously reported that Trump pressed the investigator to “find the fraud” and said it would make the investigator a national hero. A recording of the call made public two months later revealed that Trump did not say either and instead said that if the investigator looked into Fulton County the investigator would “find things that are gonna be unbelievable.” Trump also told the investigator: “When the right answer comes out, you’ll be praised.”

There's a simple reason Meadows shouldn't comply: This supposed commission was about the security breakdown/riots during the 6th. That's the only thing they are empowered to investigate. Anything else is or should be out of the commission's purview. That stupidly simple. Meadows is under no obligation to reveal this or any other information that has no baring on what transpired during that event.

    Nope.

    SEC. 3. PURPOSES.

Consistent with the functions described in section 4, the purposes of the Select Committee are the following:

    (1) To investigate and report upon the facts, circumstances, and causes relating to the January 6, 2021, domestic terrorist attack upon the United States Capitol Complex (hereafter referred to as the “domestic terrorist attack on the Capitol”) and relating to the interference with the peaceful transfer of power, including facts and causes relating to the preparedness and response of the United States Capitol Police and other Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies in the National Capital Region and other instrumentalities of government, as well as the influencing factors that fomented such an attack on American representative democracy while engaged in a constitutional process.

Due process requires an impartial even handed procedures for a fair hearing.
Hint: Americans do not like political show trials and kangaroo courts.

Yet another reason why virtually all Americans now despise our crooked Congress.

Former Vice President Mike Pence signaled on Wednesday that it’s not a given that he’ll cooperate with the House Jan. 6 select committee.

“We’ll evaluate any of those requests as they come,” Pence told the Associated Press and Fox News in a brief interview during a trip to New Hampshire amid speculation of a potential 2024 bid.

Pence stayed vague on the subject in another interview with Fox News that day, saying that “going forward, we’ll do our part to make sure the American people understand the issues on that day, which for me ultimately come down to what the Constitution required.”

The former vice president, who faced heavy pressure from then-President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 election by hijacking the vote certification process, could provide key information on the extent of Trump’s involvement in the events that led to the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, during which the attackers chanted “Hang Mike Pence!”

    https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/...perate-jan-6-committee-investigation-subpoena

Like all Repubs, Pence has to kiss the ring to have any future in the POT.

It's a dog and pony show. The whole thing is a dog and pony show, the vast majority of US Citizens acknowledge it as a dog and pony show. Doesn't stop them from wasting taxpayer money though.
