    Yup.

Cut the Kielbasa into 3-inch sections and let them steam in the sauerkraut.

Looks like there was a reporting error because it now back to 501. The new case reporting is still north of 20,000.

At 20:03 GMT +2 (2:03 PM on the East Coast of the USA) on April 2nd, 2020, the the official number of COVID-19 verified infections crossed over 1,000,000, a major, terrifying marker.

Just to put this in perspective for my American brethren. The number of infected around the world now corresponds to the entire population of San Jose, California (1 million).

For Europeans, that is the entire population of either Birmingham, England or Odessa, Ukraine.

Also, for context, just 19 days ago, when I started this thread on 2020-03-014, we started at 156,086 COVID-19 cases and 5,821 deaths. That's a 6.4-fold increase in 19 days. Way back then, all of 19 days ago, the death rate was 3.73%. It is now 5.13%. All of this in just 19 days.

Something very unusual with that chart. The people who are current smokers and people with chronic lung disease seem to be having better outcomes than people with other underlying conditions. You'd think that lung conditions (and smokers) would be the worst. You'd think they'd be in the same group with former smokers.

Also, Germany has now surpassed China in the number of COVID-19 cases and is currently number 4.

Is there an expectation that at some point, China will release their actual numbers? It's creepy how silent they've been. I wonder how awful it is.

Another interesting aspect is the fact that those with Chronic Renal Disease seems like they fair the worst. I would be curious what it is about this virus which means that people with kidney issues fair so poorly.

Maybe it has to do with their inability to take on medications?

That's what they've been telling us. Age + complicating conditions lands you in the ICU and possibly needing a ventilator. Young healthy people going out to spring break or having house parties don't get sick, but they're the major spreaders.

I haven't seen the nationwide age breakout of cases, but Texas just posted the daily update. Lots of young people, but few deaths. Map doesn't show hospitalizations but the governor said 10% require hospitalization.

Also, I noted that the age demographic is for "confirmed cases" which is different from "reported cases". Confirmed cases on this chart totals 1,034. That's a big difference from the 4,669 reported and I'm not sure why the difference. My guess is that the 1,034 is cases confirmed through State labs or the CDC, and not cases reported through independent labs and hospitals. Either way, that large chunk of people under 60 years old are likely sending the over-60's into ICU's with some needing respirators.

Yes, I concur. But the sheer % of people without pre-existing conditions who are nonetheless getting sick is truly sickening.

I can't imagine needing a dialysis machine and a ventilator at the same time. Shudder.

The kidneys filter impurities out of the blood. I can imagine that if you've got an abnormal rush of white cells flooding into the lungs to fight the virus, the resulting dead cells cannot efficiently flush through the kidneys??? I don't know.

That is where (and how) we build a herd immunity. Better to get sick and get well without "anything else" happening. That's most of the young, healthy people. Some younger people have had bad outcomes, but for the most part, their bodies are able to manage the virus effectively. Unfortunately, we've got a lot of young people just not caring because of that.

This virus is truly sickening, the way it's able to hide itself and use asymptomatic, unsuspecting people as a way to transmit from host to host. Even if it doesn't kill the victim, it's successfully torn families apart and has attacked our human community. This is worse than an AI invasion or something.

That the death numbers in Germany are rising is not unexpected. The virus has hit the nursing homes.

    Are families allowed to visit?

Texas shut down allowing family members to visit their relatives living in nursing homes here a couple weeks ago, with the only exception being to pay final respects. About the only way the virus could get in then is by employees, which I suppose is "enough".

Nope, they are all closed to the public.
But it needs just one small mistake by the care takers and the virus is in the nursing home.
    Sadly unavoidable.

Not even final respects are permitted.

    Oh, dear Lord.

    My eyes are literally burning.

France has posted 1,355 COVID-19 deaths today. Just for France. Just for today.

    We weep.

South Korea proved it can be slowed down. Don't give up and be prepared to step down hard on people who violate orders to stay apart from others.

There were a lot of very brave Germans in WW2. I'm reminded of Grant's memoir where he recounts meeting Robert E. Lee at Appomattox:

“What General Lee’s feelings were I do not know. As he was a man of much dignity, with an impassable face, it was impossible to say whether he felt inwardly glad that the end had finally come, or felt sad over the result, and was too manly to show it. Whatever his feelings, they were entirely concealed from my observation; but my own feelings, which had been quite jubilant on the receipt of his letter, were sad and depressed. I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse. I do not question, however, the sincerity of the great mass of those who were opposed to us.”

Brave Southern men fought until they ran out of men and material to keep the war going. The same can be said of Germany in WW2.

Japan would have done well to have studied the fighting spirit of Americans in the Civil War before they ever decided to attack us in 1941, and we should never underestimate the courage and determination of the German people.
