Would this be the senile old man that crashed the young whipper snapper that is Hillary Clinton?

I dunno, at least Trump can walk without stumbling. Unlike Saint Hilla:

And he doesn't appear to have any kind of cough either:

So if your choice for pres was based on the relative health of the two candidates, I can't see why you'd say Trump is senile when he was clearly the better of the two in that regard. Put another way, if Trump is senile, what does that say about Hilla?

    Trump is humorless.

He is way too thin-skinned to sit through that kind of roasting.

He is, at heart, a frightened immature snowflake who has a thin skin and no sense of humor.

I loved GW Bush at those dinners. He was the master of them all. His own skits were superb. Trump must be very busy and not willing to mix it up with those who despise him since he took office.

PBS has openly despised Trump from the moment he won the convention.

I would expect the same is true of the rest of the media other than FOX which as usual is fair and balanced.

Trump fades in the evening... He has to utterly dominate to function.. He can't share an evening with others who have wit and smarts.

They should just invite Alec Baldwin to stand in for Trump and make it an hour long skit for the masses.

Typical of all bullies like Trump to take the cowards way out when faced with a confrontation where he knows he can't BS his way through it.

Much better that he sulks in his bedroom and sends out snide childish tweets from behind the protection of the secret service.

It isn't as though We the People won't still be laughing at his expense.

Not only was every story highly edited, but it was accompanied by absolute toxicity. There is no room for that kind of snark and hate in the news. If they can't be trusted to report just the facts, unedited and without personal comment, their licenses should be yanked.

The problem is there are way too many so-called 24/7 news outlets, and it's impossible for most people to differentiate news from commentary. America just plain isn't that smart, thanks to public education. It's really hard, no...impossible, to believe anyone thinks of CNN (and others) as NEWS. It's nothing but babbling pundits shoving their opinions at us. I'm not interested.

    - To prove his maturity
    - To show he has a sense of humour
    - To benefit a cause
    - To respect an American tradition
    - To build bridges with an estranged press

Admit it - you've got a "safe space" President, only secure in the presence of his self-reflection.

And he is going to hurt your cause, if you happen to have something akin to individual ideals.

Wrong! They want him there. He just thumbed his nose at them again. Good for him. Keep tweeting Mr. President, it continues to drive the leftie/socialists further up a tree.

Since Nov.9, 2016, every day is Christmas.

I don't think Trump should attend. He's a bully, but he can't hold his own around people who are witty and well informed.

Then they would have passed for the snowflakes. Now instead it's Trump.

As smart as not paying taxes.

Now that would be a more rational reason. But I doubt it - Trump doesn't strike me as a coward, but rather as someone who can't take criticism, of either the positive or negative kind.

At least Bush was man enough to take it without reacting like a spoiled child. Trump just runs away.

I agree. Why go to a function where 90% of the crowd hates you. President Trump has forever changed the swamp.
The nice guy thing is never going to work with the current media.

He doesn't have the wit to outsmart anyone. He ran away, just like he dodged the draft. Such a fine, brave patriot. End of.

In all respect, it is you who was being naive here my friend.

Come on. The press is a power, and as such it rubs shoulders with likewise powers. Of course it is interested - they are private entreprises, not charity ones. The trick is to pass messages while appearing to be objective. Or it is nowadays, since the medias are even more powerful and omnipresent than in the day where they were more objective.

The solution? IMO, it's somewhere between capitalism and communism (which, let's admit it, is better suited to the concept of press): Have a government-owned media outlet who would show the privatly owned what the standards of journalism are, like offering many sides in debates and editorials, equal exposure time and focus on the more important matters instead of the spectacular knee-jerk emotive schnitz that sells so much.

Anybody old enough will remember that the quality of the press was way better in the days of the Fair Doctrine.

I like to compare this to mooning someone. Like "Trump just mooned the press. Ha ha ha."

Sure, for a while the mooned people's reaction was comical to behold, but in the end it's the mooner who's nonetheless found himself buck-naked for all to see.
