Sure, let’s quit NATO, then next time we fight a Middle Eastern war to protect “America’s interests” the soldiers whose lives lives would be saved by the hosptial at Landstuhl will just die instead. Our troops can rely on sea based logistics instead of being able to route cargo aircraft through Ramstein. We can try to collect intelligence in European without JAC Molesworth or of our other bases. Let us try and protect America from nuclear attack without the radars in Canada and Greenland.

    Yeah we get nothing.

Only .0016% of our GDP goes to NATO’s defense. 30 billion dollars a year.

Compared with the rest of NATO spending a combined $250 billion.

In terms of direct payments to NATO for shared equipment, those are based on GNI. The US pays 22% because we make up 22% of the total GNI of NATO.

I actually think he's right on this issue. He should have been more professional and diplomatic in his delivery though. That's really what has everyone up in arms. Some things need to be read between the lines.

We “can”. We don’t usually. And when you are talking about wounded soldiers in need of immediate critical care, extra hours of flying can mean life or death.

Well then, we should not depend on Landstuhl, because it is a long way from everything, except Western Europe. We usually take our immediate critical care with us. Lanstuhl is usually the second stop on the way home.

The US only spending $30 billion a year on NATO’s defense. If we bulk that up to what we spend directly on the defense of Canada and the territory of the US itself, maybe $150 billion. Still even that number is only .8% of the US’s GDP.

Landstuhl is only a couple hours flying time from Iraq and the rest of the Middle East. The hospitals and airbases in NATO countries have been critical to US warfighting in the last 20 years.

I don't think our transport aircraft are supersonic and that is what it would take to fly from Iraq to Ramstein in two hours.
Take another look at your graph and look at the labels. The number you are quoting is direct spending. All the sources I can find show our support to NATO at 3.6%. I guess you could compare our total spending of 600 billion vs their 240 billion.

    Its not even subtle.

I've enjoyed reading about the differences between eastern and western diplomacy/politics.

Shinzo is outclassing her in every way.

    Its hilarious.

Good catch btw-thats the type of insight a lefty would completely miss.

That was sarcasm in case you missed it.

Yes NATO is useful, having allies is always useful, but it's no secret that member nations of NATO need the United States a hell of a lot more than we need any of them. They know it, you know it, the world knows it.

That's the leverage we have in negotiating with NATO spending that other nations do not have. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the underlying issue you have with this is the "fairness" aspect of it. We pay our fair share as does everyone else and we shouldn't be asking others to pay more.

It's not about fairness, the US rarely does anything to be "fair" we do things that are in our best interests which are often not exactly "fair" to everyone involved.

Basically what we are doing is bullying the rest of NATO into paying more, "or else". The "or else" being we'll quit and then they can run NATO without us. That would be a HUGE blow to NATO, no other nation leaving NATO would even come remotely close to the impact it would have on that organization if the US left it. And they KNOW IT. Which gives us the ability to do things like say "pay more".

Denmark can say "pay more or we'll quit" and NATO would say, alright bye. America says pay more or we'll quit and NATO sat there and said "****....alright lets talk about this". Why? Because the entire planet including NATO knows that America has way more money and power and global influence than Denmark and if America walks away from an alliance then that is a huge blow. Denmark leaving would be like stubbing your toe, America leaving is getting your legs and one arm cut off.

Bottom line is pretty simple to understand. If **** hits the fan and war breaks out there is one nation in NATO who is going to lead the alliance logistically, militarily, and monetarily. And we all know who that nation is. America said flat out look, "We spend A LOT of money on our war machine guys, more than all of the rest of you combined. If all hell breaks loose we are the ones who are going to use that war machine to defend ourselves AND YOU. So in turn, pay a little bit more towards NATO because you all know damn well that if WWIII breaks out we are going to be the first ones you call to come help you defend yourselves because the majority of you are literally incapable of actually defending yourselves from any real threat".

    ^^That's not even unreasonable.

NATO has taken advantage of the fact that America spends all of this money on our war machine on our own accord, but every nation in NATO KNOWS that we will be there if all hell breaks loose.

All we are saying is that since we spend so much money on defense to protect ourselves, AND NATO countries in the event of war, we are asking for a little more money from the rest of them.

You want to know who whines about American defense spending? American citizens. You know who doesn't whine about American defense spending? Czech Republic. Why? Because they KNOW who is coming with all of that military power to defend THEM if Russia starts acting up over there. The rest of NATO is perfectly happy with America spending 600-700 billion bucks a year it's military. Because they reap the benefits of that in the form of guaranteed protection if all hell breaks loose.

Luxembourg has like 1000 people in their entire Army. If war breaks out Luxembourg will contribute what amounts to basically nothing at all to the military arm of NATO. So saying that, since they can't really help the alliance out militarily seeing how they have less people in the military than my high school graduating class, they should be willing to help out MORE monetarily.

The US will provide the most troops and military power for NATO in the event of war and we pay 22% of NATO's civil budget. Luxembourg will provide virtually nobody in the event of war and pays 0.157% of NATO's civil budget. How is it in any way unreasonable to ask that since they can't really help the military aspect of the alliance they should pay a little more for the civil aspect of it?

Why do European countries need the US at all?

Unlike us they are not afraid of everyone.

Well. that about sums up the isolationist world view!

We know how well that turned out the last time we tried it. And spare us the drivel about the world being a different place. Putin is no different than Stalin was.

Reasons why Trump is wrong about NATO:

    1. The Military Industrial Complex will be less profitable.
    2. The Democrat Socialists of America want NATO now that the USSR has transformed into a more Capitalist Russian Federation, now that is logical isn't it?
3, The EU likes having USA pay 50% of the total cost.
    4. The Germans might start building U boats again and try to sink American merchant ships
    5. Soros needs shipping lanes in the Mediterranean Sea protected so that more African and Muslim immigrants can flood into Europe.
    6. The USA may get another NeoCon President like GW Bush and wish to invade Iraq again.
    7. China may become a threat.. so NATO will be needed to defend the Pacific Ocean too and launch nuclear missiles during the Battle of Armageddon.
    8. Globalist Billionaires prefer that American working class and middle class citizens pay for their merchant ships to be protected by the Worlds Largest Navy.

Your coming around. :) Now consider NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
How much of our "stuff" is in the South China Sea or the Mediterranean?
Some one had it right earlier. How much would you cut the US military budget if the EU put another 200 billion into defense.

Sometimes it is time to call in the cards in a organization. They need NATO much more than we. That will guarantee they will ante up. It's just that the American Political Establishment ( the swamp) never wanted to rock the boat because they have globalist and $$$$ aspirations.

Good points but we had another significant benefit-we prevented aggressive (and socialist) euros from going into wars that involved the entire globe.

Even if backwards Russia wants to be backwards Russia.
