Not letting corporations cheat the taxpayers is communism?

You do know the US military used to build it own weapons right? Were they “communists”?

And their own cannons, and rifles, and ships, and build their own tanks...

Springfield Armory? Rock Island Arsenal? Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant? Bath Iron Works (pre-1995)?

Ever heard of any of these?

I think it's much ado about nothing.

They'll get it fixed......they always do.

These carriers are vast and complex arrays of technology.......you can't expect it to be quick and easy.

These carriers do ensure that we remain by far the most powerful nation in the world.

I read a couple days ago that Russia's lone carrier is out of action.

Not in the USA. Meriwether Lewis procured everything for the expedition west from civilian contractors or retailers on letters of credit from Thomas Jefferson. Even his rifles were made by gunsmiths in Pennsylvania under contract with the arsenal at Harper's Ferry. The exception was his Newfoundland, Seaman, which he paid for himself.

And Special Forces today buy their own gear rather than going through what is issued. What is your point?

Are you denying that Springfield Armory, Rock Island Arsenal, the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, Bath Iron Works, and all of the other myriad of government owned weapons manufacturers didn’t exist?

Except Russia would never use their own carrier to go after a US carrier group. They’d use their anti-ship missile subs.

Detroit arsenal, government owned contractor operated.
Bath iron works was always privately owned.
Rock island arsenal is the only thing that could really be called government manufacturing of arms and what it manufactures is extremely limited

Carriers are about hegemony.......which we have in spades and Russia lacks.

Hegemony is how you get power and, most of all, wealth.

But then, bowing to the brilliance of capitalism in a free society, they unleashed the power of innovation and competitiveness that has led to remarkable innovation, rather than restricting thinking to just military engineers..

One thing that's rather funny about this Russian propaganda thread, there are 10 other Nuclear Aircraft carriers in service besides the one mentioned in the OP.

Been to the Rock Island Arsenal. It's almost all civilians working there with one helluva rush hour. 25 civilians to 1 military member.

I helped build APC's for Cadillac Gage. As always the military controls the contractors and their subcontractors. The military sends out contracted inspectors to inspect inspectors contracted by contractors. The only way to defeat them is to assign your most gregarious, and especially women, to keep them all drunk, and even that seldom works.

My god you have to be kidding. The Russian navy is a toothless bear held together with duct tape and glue. We could in fact put all our carriers to sea if we wanted to in a war. It would be like spanking a small child. The US navy is the most powerful navy the world has ever seen. Be thankful we don't embarrass you by proving it. Lol

The US government continued building its own weapons long after horses went away.

That group would be dealing with dozens of sea skimming missiles coming in from multiple directions.

And it’s led to the military-industrial complex getting wildly rich bilking the taxpayers with faulty products and also making us pay them to fix those products.

The carrier strategy has always been fragile to the extent that you could lob a nuke into their op area. Always. But, of course, that also equates into any other possible force projection platform. I would further assert though that there does exist methods of protection that I believe will be able to make that risk to the group survivable. I don't see an alternative for large scale force projection yet available to us. If you want to put real force on target, absent a carrier group, for most of the globe, there is no other option for us.

So, why does it cost 13B a piece? Because it can. And congress allocated the money to pay for them. Don't like it? Get congress to reign in the list of what if requirements that went into the cost of the platform. Ask again why the contract paid as much as they did for the labor. All kinds of components that a real conversation could be crafted around here.

IF...they managed to get close enough and IF the managed to launch missiles they might damage a few ships before being destroyed but likely the missiles would mostly be eliminated.
