The rift was officially established at the time of UDI in 1965. As I recall, the only diplomatic legations after that were Switzerland, Greece, and the R.S.A.

Like it or not, England was a staunch supporter for apartheid for 50 years straight, and even after the "rift" blocked key sanctions along with the USA for years.
