As someone who has been to Newcomb Hall and attended multicultural events there during Family Weekends, I disagree with your characterization. If you look at the website, it's clear that while the space exists to make minorities feel welcome at UVA, the center is open to anyone. https://multicultural.virginia.edu/multicultural-student-center

The Fox News article on the first post of this thread even begins with UVA issued a reminder that the multicultural center is open to everyone.

There are racist jokes on this very thread. Certainly, students who want a reprieve from this nonsense shouldn't be called racist but this students comments were out of line. The center is for anyone who wants to be part of a supportive environment.

I notice that there are Jewish group, Asian group and Hispanic group events at UVA. I have attended the black and Asian events. They are all very interesting. I have seen white people at events sponsored by the black student groups and no one asked them to leave. No one made me feel unwelcome at Asian events. I support the multicultural schools, TV stations, etc. They enrich school environments and our country. Diversity is interesting.

I also support multiculturalism when it is all-inclusive. That center was set up by and for minority cultures though. Of course they can't put a sign on the door saying, "No Whites Allowed". I would guess that no one could be banned from entering any student building at a public university, but that doesn't mean that all are welcomed.

For students to host scheduled or special events for other students (or parents) is different from who they want in their group on a day-to-day basis.

Apparently, honkeys have no right to be proud of who they are or where they came from even tho they have built great societies, and advanced humanity wherever they go. :(

    Black pride
is a movement in response to dominant white cultures and ideologies that encourages black people to celebrate black culture and embrace their African heritage.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pride

White pride, or white power, is an expression primarily used by white separatist, white nationalist, neo-Nazi and white supremacist organizations in order to signal racist or racialist viewpoints.[2][3] It is also a slogan used by the prominent post-Ku Klux Klan group Stormfront and a term used to make racist/racialist viewpoints more palatable to the general public who may associate historical abuses with the terms white nationalist, neo-Nazi, and white supremacist.

They are set up by the schools as part of the recruitment and retention process. The new centers are in a building where various cultural events take place. The fact that the various minority groups and white students can go there and attend these events is a good thing. They don't have to all join each others groups to support each other and enjoy diverse cultures.

I think that when people focus on maintaining and preserving their unique cultural heritage it's a good thing. Ideally we should be able to appreciate and respect someone else's culture and work together, live in the same neighborhoods, establish friendships and so on with each other. Multiculturalism in that sense is unifying and good for the country..

A campus group for Latinos and one for Asians and one for blacks to preserve culture makes sense. When those groups ban together to open a "Multicultural" Center specifically for "underrepresented and marginalized" groups, then they are no longer preserving a culture. They have started a political think tank.

I'll defend their right to do have a minority-focused political think tank as much as I'll defend the truly multicultural conservative-focused political think tank YAF.

Yes, I agree that being invited to an event and learning about other cultures is a good thing.

What the young woman is complaining about in the video is that outside of events where everyone is invited, the Center is not for non-POC. She wouldn't have used the same words if she knew that a video would go viral, but she did get support and applause.

I'm straight, but I quite a few years ago, I had a gay friend/co-worker take me to a gay bar. I was welcomed, but let's say that there are 50 gay regulars in a gay bar and 150 straight people start showing up every day. Is it still a gay bar?

The Multicultural Center at VA State is for POC and LGBT. They don't want a bunch of straight white people in there every day to the extent that the POC and LGBT's are again outnumbered and in the minority.

There are campus organizations and groups which do welcome all races and sexual preferences because they are based on some common interest other than race. The Multicultural Center is race based. That's just a fact. It's stated on several of their web pages.

When have white people ever had to struggle to make it in a society? We've always been top dog. Minorities (and I'm including all women here) can (and do) take pride in the fights that got them where they are and the fights required to retain their civil rights. Whites (or at least white men) have not had to do any of that in modern history. We've always been the oppressors, not the oppressed.

Oppression is about money, not about race. It always has been. Skin color of oppressors is coincidental.

Wealthy blacks and whites owned slaves in early-American history. Slaves were both black and white. The Irish slave trade began with 30,000 white men, women and child slaves to America. People with money bought, sold and owned people without money. That wasn't just happening in America either. It was a "norm" of those days.

White people, black people, brown people and yellow people have to struggle to make it in society today....if they are poor. We have better opportunities here to make it out of poverty than most countries in the world.

Rich white people have always been top dog in America because the country is majority white. Rich yellow people have always been top dog in China because China is majority yellow. Rich brown people have always been top dog in Latin America because Latin America is majority brown. Rich black people have always been top dog in Africa because Africa is majority black.

The whole tribal propaganda sold by the left is disingenuous and based on a false grounds. If you tell people that they can't make it in society over and over because of their skin color (or any other reason) and give them just enough "free" money to make ends meet, then "racism" as a excuse becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Poor people of all colors manage to break out of poverty and become successful. Why do Democrats want to hold impoverished human beings back from trying to better their lives by enabling them to stay poor with meager welfare scraps and victim cards? Because it works?

Newcomb houses a cafeteria, lounge, bank, post office, meeting rooms, game room and a theatre. It's a standard campus building that is frequented by people of all races. The second floor is where the multicultural center is housed.

This month the Pakistani students are sponsoring game night, there is a showing of the movie Moonlight sponsored by a black gay group, there is an event for people with disabilities, there is some sort of Spring showcase in April, it looks like a talent show and a Lovers of Middle Eastern languages event. There will be internship and financial aid workshops. There was a Valentines Day event, etc.

It looks like the students can meet with others who they share cultural interests, hang out and get practical information. While I expect there to be a socio-political discussion after the viewing of Moonlight, alot of these are social and practical events where people can hang out like you did at the gay bar and meet others with similar backgrounds and interests or try something new. Keep in mind that these kids have friends of all races on campus and off campus. The people who complain about it are being divisive.

UVA is in the top 3 of the nations public universities. It has a notorious alumni who was integral to the recent hate march in Charlotesville. The welcome to UVA was rocky for incoming Freshman 2 1/2 years ago. I know because my child had been accepted there at the time.

The Nazi who killed Heather and the other protestors rioted about a week before Freshman enrollment. You could probably imagine that minority parents were concerned about the climate. My mother called me from another state to say that she had seen the news and ask if it would be safe there.

The current UVA students held a vigil to counter the hate and make the incoming minority freshman feel welcome. The multicultural center helps create a welcoming environment but we don't need kids like that loud mouth on the video.

Oh, there are all sorts of reasons people oppress other people. Money is just one reason. Power, religion, warped ideologies, ego, sex, etc. all go into the mix.

Oh, I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but 99.99% of slaves in American history were owned by whites. Slavery was a system enshrined by white land-owners for the benefit of white landowners to the detriment of (almost entirely) African slaves.

Oh, I'm not saying poor people shouldn't be proud. They should. It's hard just living in grinding poverty.

But that's not my point. Being proud of being white is pathetic. We have no choice in the matter of our skin color. My ancestors certainly didn't have to struggle to be accepted in THIS society, unlike women and minorities. I have no history of battles fought for hard-won rights. Me and my ancestors have always had all the civil rights we ever wanted in this society.

Yes. 99% of slaves in American history were blacks owned by whites...because America was founded largely by white people. At the same time period 99% of slaves in Africa were blacks owned by blacks. Skin color is not relevant to the fact that poor people were sold as slaves to rich people for hundreds of years here....and the slave trade existed for a thousand years before America was even discovered. Oppression does not have a color, unless it's green, for money.

I agree that being proud of being white is stupid, just as being proud of being brown or black is dumb. Skin is an organ, so people shouldn't be any more proud of their skin than they are of their liver or kidneys.

Democrats seem to keep fighting battles which were won by Americans when 1) slavery ended, 2) women got the right to vote, 3) blacks got the right to vote and the war for equality was won in the 60's with the Civil Rights Act. During that time period President Johnson put blacks and poor people on the government plantation with broader welfare assistance which is a disincentive to work and mutes the need for independent financial success.

Today, a black/brown/white boy or girl born with the significant disadvantage of being born to welfare-dependent parents have an equal opportunity to break out and become independent and successful. The battles and the war for equality is settled. It will always be a harder struggle for people to start from nothing and climb out of the poverty hole than for people born to parents who are at least in the independent working-class. Obviously, the better off your parents, the more opportunities you start out with. That's the same situation in all countries, but we have more opportunities here than other countries . Many countries still have a caste system where if you are born poor you will always be poor and so will your children and grandchildren. We are blessed to live in a country where that is not the case.

    It's all about the green.

As long as there are still voices on the Right calling for the elimination of the Civil Rights Act (indeed, calling for the elimination of every amendment after the Bill of Rights, right Roy Moore?), then the war isn't over. And we haven't even touched women's reproductive rights, which weren't secured until the 70's and are constantly under attack by Christians

I agree with most of this. Keep in mind though, a poor white male named Sam is going to have a much easier time finding a job/renting an apartment/not being hassled by cops, than a poor black man named Ja'Mil. Ja'Mil, however, will have an easier time getting into college.

Do you think they’d allow you to create a white group and have white events?

I can't think of any reason, other than nefarious ones, why the majority cultural group in a country would want x-only spaces and x-only events (where "x" is whatever that cultural group is. Whites here. Asians in China. Blacks in Africa, etc.).

Explain to me the reason why, in Japan say, there should be a Japanese-only event. Or a Japanese-only space. I can think of only one reason: to rub it in the face of everyone else- it's not enough we control all the power, we also want safe spaces too. But maybe you can give me a good reason. Have at it.

Oh, I thought of a much better way to explain it:

Take a bunch of Chinese people and call it Chinatown. Now surround that with tons of white people. Call the whole thing "New York City". Now imagine the white people in New York City demanding white-only spaces and events.

    Sounds really stupid, doesn't it?

For the record being white is more than about skin color. Specifically there are three distinct races with far more than skin color as differences. Caucasoid, mongoloid and negroid.

Because they, just like every other group, have every right to be in an environment in which they can freely express themselves without fear of judgment to discuss their accomplishments, tragedy’s and shared common experiences. They have the right to advocate for programs and policies that explicitly benefit their group just like every other group has that right.

And they have a right to not be surrounded by white hating asshats like the chick in that video.

Why do you assume she speaks for all of us? We assume Trump speaks for you guys because that's who you elected and that's what you're telling pollsters. Why are you assuming some random person represents all leftists?

The Multicultural Student Center (whatever that is) needs to be open to all races, including whites. In a lot of cities, whites aren't even a majority.

I think creating a "whites only" space is a fantastically BAD idea, but I can see where they're coming from. When members of the dominant powerful culture take abuse from members of the less-powerful minority that has a history of being owned by the dominant cultural group, the classy thing to do is suck it up, not cry about safe spaces.
