Once the virus arrived in Italy, the growth was primarily through local transmission. And Italy put some pretty serious restrictions in place early. Like locking down entire towns.

The restrictions that Trump has put in place would be like imposing a travel restriction from outside the EU but still permitting free travel within the EU.

I doubt America is ready for the kinds of restrictions that Italy has imposed.

Italy was a day late and a dollar short...their socialized medicine simply couldn't handle it.

We will see. My impression is that America is going less, and slower, than Italy. And you completely made up the bit about the “socialized medicine system”. Do you actually have any understanding of how the two systems compare? Because they certainly seemed to have more testing capability than USA.

    https://www.livescience.com/why-italy-coronavirus-deaths-so-high.html

One factor affecting the country's death rate may be the age of its population — Italy has the oldest population in Europe, with about 23% of residents 65 or older, according to The New York Times. The median age in the country is 47.3, compared with 38.3 in the United States, the Times reported. Many of Italy's deaths have been among people in their 80s, and 90s, a population known to be more susceptible to severe complications from COVID-19, according to The Local.

Once you have this virus spread through the community, the number of infected will inevitably increase exponentially and this applies with even greater force to the US, which hasn't taken any real measures to prevent the virus from spreading. If there is a sliver of hope that the virus won't spread as widely in the US as it would otherwise, that is mainly due to the fact that the virus began spreading in the US as warmer weather is approaching. Since the virus appears to not survive in higher temperatures, that might limit the exponential rise of the virus from afflicting tens of millions in the US to merely a few million people.

Otherwise, this whole nonsense about the US health care system being better prepared to handle the spread of the virus compared to Italy (or even Iran) is simply that: nonsense. The US health care system does encourage excellent care for its elites and near elites and does provide incentives for working on the cutting edge of medical care. The latter might even give the US some advantages in finding an effective vaccine or treatment for the virus. But as long as neither has happened, for the kind of basic things needed for widespread testing, prevention, and care for the virus (where breadth of coverage and other things are much more important), the US is simply one of the lesser prepared countries. Already, millions of people in Iran have been tested for the Coronavirus whereas the US has problems administering a fraction of the number of such tests. Within a few days after shortages of face masks, sanitizing liquids etc in Iran, the country was able to start productions lines for these items to begin meeting demand. Entire cities in Iran are being spray washed with sanitizing equipment and many roads were being manned with people administering temperature tests for those exiting or entering cities, while many other road and highways are being closed off for general traffic. The government media is providing around the clock public health messages, schools, sporting events, and large gatherings have been cancelled and to reduce the need for people to go to banks, the government has extended the expiration date on ATM cards which were expiring until the summer, postponed the due date on loans and other bills for a couple of months as well, and taken a lot of other measures, many of which the US won't be able to take as easily. That said, there are places in Iran (especially in Tehran) where a large number of the residents aren't heading the advice not to leave your home, where you still find people in shopping malls and even traffic jams (both in the city and highways leading out for travel outside), whereas to Italy's credit, it seems people there are following their government's instructions better. (A point that is being made in daily briefings and public announcements in Iran, criticizing those who are still ignoring the public health announcements).

Anyway, my main point is this: the US began taking even moderate measures to prevent the spread of the virus rather late. The measures it has taken aren't all that notable. And there is no doubt that at least a few million Americans will contract this virus. If the numbers don't reach tens of millions it will only be because of the weather warming up, not anything that makes the US at all comparably better equipped to handle this epidemic. The only thing the US should be able equipped to do is to come up with a vaccine or treatment, but breadth of coverage has never been the strong suit of the US medical system. And that can be literally fatal to tens of thousands of people when talking about an epidemic such as this one.

Have you ever bothered to actually compare the number of deaths from other major epidemics, including influenza, in the US to other countries? There are people here who want to 'calm' the reaction to the Coronavirus 'scare' by reminding folks that 80,000 people died of the flu in the US last year. What does that really tell you? Those are a lot of dead people and it only shows how ill prepared the US is to deal with epidemics of this nature generally. Otherwise, how many people died from the flu in Italy last year? How many people died from the flu in Iran last year?

I tried to quickly check some headlines last year about the flu in Italy and Iran.

What are you talking about, we are already failing. We cannot test anyone. If you have a fever you cannot get a test. Our system has already failed.
