Each country decides itself and makes a claim. If you think that some thing belongs to you you make a claim and prove that it is yours.

Well, I guess, you won’t be upset then if and when Ukraine retakes Crimea by force. After all - the might is right and Ukraine is getting awfully mighty while Russia is getting weaker with each passing minute. If I was in charge of Russia, I’d cut my losses and get out while I still can. ;)

Do not like wiki, look yourself for this event in Internet. There is plenty of information about it. This transfer was illegal. Until Ukraine became was a friendly state to Russia, noone cared about it. Once they became unfriendly, Russia claimed the territory back.

It is your position that the USA "provoked" Putin into launching a war of naked aggression to annex Ukraine in violation of all international law.

What does that say about Putin's competence to rule Russia?

Why was it an illegal transfer. Try to refrain from Wikipedia.

so as a German you must have been a fan of the wall.

so what? It matters because now I know who I’m dealing with. Probably a Stalin supporter who will defend his murders. I have desire to pander to the likes of people who are supportive of those ideals. Nor does it make any logical sense that a German would support a country that attempted to divide your people physically and mentally

As far as I know, he is not a German - he is a Russian that frequently travels to Germany (I assume work/business).

The Ukrainian president is more of a man and a leader than Putin ever will be.

We'll see if Ukraine manages to do that. I doubt this will happen in Putin time. Anyway, we are off topic.

Russia being the largest country by physical size- it doesn't need more territory.
Russia, being a strong nuclear power, has zero reason to fear the Ukraine, who had nuclear weapons- and gave them up.
Russia, who has a long record of aggression and dictatorship and suppression, sometimes incredibly violent, certainly is not threatened by NATO, who have never initiated a war anywhere.
NATO only exists to form an alliance to protect it's members from invasions- and that came as a result of WWII- and to prevent the expansionary policies of Russia from taking over Europe as Hitler had done.

Russia IS the offender; the invader in the Ukraine. You do not have a right to destroy your neighbor because you think they might get strong or for any reason other than self-defense..

The whole argument that Russia is some kind of victim and had no choice makes zero sense at all.
Even the Russian people know that Putin is acting out the plan Hitler used in the late 30's to take over Europe, and they don't like it either.
Russia lost 27 million soldiers and citizens in WWII, more than any other nation. That was nearly 4 times the number of German deaths, nearly 50 times the number us US deaths.
The Russian people don't want that to happen again.

I think Putins biggest problem is fear- fear that freedom in nations beside Russia might get contagious, could produce desires for more freedom in Russia. Make him look like the dictator he is instead of a president, destroy the illusion of his image. That would scare him, and the reaction to that fear would be- to call such a nation a threat to his.... to justify attack.

While I realize that Putin makes this claim, I do not believe him. To me, it does not pass the smell test.

To be exact this is the position of the author of the article and I agree with it. As for Putin, the start of the war showed his incompetence and resulted in the downfall of the image of Russia.

My profile states the location -Germany, but not that I am German. I have worked in Germany for more than 10 years, recently moved. I am Russian born in Ukraine. As for Stalin, I am not a fan of Stalin.

A head MRI test for stroke or TIA might be a better test at this point.

Quite a lot of people in Russia think the same way about Putin. But only few say what they think openly.

Yes, Napoleon proved that Russia has more than enough land to absorb and repel even a massive invasion force.
Hitler ignored that and proved it again. Putin's justification for this war is absurd.

You seem like a nice enough guy. I just don’t understand how anyone can be sympathetic to Russian ideals. The way they treat political adversaries and how they constantly use nuclear threats is just not acceptable

They are biased. What stared the war in Ukraine was Putin's over confidence and miscalculation that President Biden was weak and couldn't coalesce World unity for sanctions and support for Ukraine.

He's bet the farm and ... lost.

Why should the U.S. be responsible for Russian worries?

So Russia is just as responsible for keeping peace in the world as we are right?
