Yes, very depressing. Once upon a time many of them were have in mental care facilities but Ronnie Reagan decided they should be released. What we have today is the results.

I wouldn't really blame Ronnie for that since almost all of the western nations did the same around the same time. Being commited was considered a human right violation in the 80's. Even today, unless they commit a crime, you can't force them to even follow treatment much less commit them against their will.

Bull **** Reagan had zero to do with it. That resulted from an unholy alliance between trial lawyers, patients rights advocates, and good intentions paving the road to hell. State mental hospitals were sued by the lawyers, at the behest of the activists the result was state mental hospitals ability to keep people off the streets who were a danger to themselves and others, mostly the former, were sharply curtailed. State mental hospitals were supposed to be replaced by group homes but NIMBY saw to it that there were never going to be enough group homes and there were more than a few patients that simply weren't suited to a group home environment. The result of course was the pictures you saw. Where this leftist trope blaming Reagan came from I don't know but it is entirely false

Not get rid, just make way more difficult to commit someone in one or keep them there.

In America we got rid of them, we try to use prisons as mental hospitals. (Doesn't work)

You're blaming today's homeless crisis on Ronald Reagan? LMFAO!

This is California. California is run by Democrats. They can create and institutionalize all the homeless they want AND THEY HAVEN'T DONE SO!!!!!!

The Mental Health Systems Act of 1980 was repealed in 1981 by a DEMOCRATICALLY controlled congress and signed by Ronald Reagan. Why are you blaming this ALL on Ronald Reagan when it was the DEMOCRATICALLY controlled congress that created and passed the repeal bill???

Reagan left office in 1989. I guess no one has seen fit to fix the problem since then?

California is a very Blue state. Why don't those bleeding-heart liberals fix the problem?

Los Angeles and the entire surrounding region is overcrowded, driving up housing prices.

Average rent for a cheap tiny apartment (and we're talking about one that's not in the best area) is probably three or four times the mortgage payment of homeowners living in many other parts of the country.

Especially any of the older city areas that are pedestrian-friendly around there are not going to be affordable to people who can't afford a car. The whole region of Southern California in general is known to be one of the worst urban regions in the country for those without a car, due to the city layout and street design. Part of that was intentional to try to keep the lower income population out of the suburbs, but when the city cores gentrified, the poor were sort of left with nowhere to go. Many are now "stranded" in the suburbs and have a very difficult time being able to get around, especially with the public transportation being so terrible. (Can also be difficult to search for or get to a job under those circumstances. For many homeless, once they lose their car they're sleeping in, that's often the end of the line, no recovering from that)

Only when they cause a criminal problem. That's about five or ten per cent at most.

Missouri is not a city it is a state and Saint Louis has been a Democratic strong hold since the end of Reconstruction.
