Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2017 is shared by 3 Scientists. One of them an American

Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 is shared by 4 Scientists. All of them Americans.

So it looks like our "lousy" education hasn't reached the University level. Or is it just that Republicans haven't found a way to slash funding at Higher Education level or managed to undermine the quality the way they have done at K-12 level?

    Not for lack of trying....

If you mean the Nobel Peace Prize, it went to ICAN. Hope it helps them in their efforts. They are certainly fighting a gallant war.

The United States has excellent education and many of the best schools on the planet. As Fareed Zakaria pointed out in his book "The Post-American World", it's not the lack of education, but the lack of access. Federal funding of schools is only about 8% with the majority of funds paid for by states or local taxes (e.g. county). This means poor states have poor schools and poor districts have poor schools. Richer states, cities and counties have much better schools. It's the averaging of these two disparities that drops the US to mediocre levels compared to other nations.

    https://www2.ed.gov/about/overview/fed/role.html
Education is primarily a State and local responsibility in the United States. It is States and communities, as well as public and private organizations of all kinds, that establish schools and colleges, develop curricula, and determine requirements for enrollment and graduation. The structure of education finance in America reflects this predominant State and local role. Of an estimated $1.15 trillion being spent nationwide on education at all levels for school year 2012-2013, a substantial majority will come from State, local, and private sources. This is especially true at the elementary and secondary level, where about 92 percent of the funds will come from non-Federal sources.

It means Logan HS, Logan, Utah, has a Nobel winner twice in the last six years.

Yes. And that's why it should end. Children should not pay the price of education being managed by ideologues. All children in this country deserve the same level of education.

Which is why i have advocated for years that education funds need to be distributed to districts equally on the state level. Perhaps even weighted in favor or the poorer districts until they are brought up to an equal standard.

That's up to the states. Even the Blue States don't do it that way because citizens vote otherwise.

I readily agree that it is in our nation's best interests to maximize the potential of all public school students, but I also see the problems in doing so.

Maybe if the Democrats stopped focusing on banning guns and just adding an "education tax" on them, we could do that.

We've done that in Texas for 30 years. 22% of our local city taxes is taken by the state and given to "poor" districts along the Mexican border. They call it "Robin Hood".

I don't think the choice needs to be between educating them or preventing them from being killed. We can do both. All we need is to get rid of the ideologues and do the right thing.

Any citizen that doesn't see the value in educating the less fortunate is an idiot in my book. More important that getting the funds to those who need is making sure those funds are used appropriately.

Neither party will stop their gun focus, and an "education tax" is very difficult to pass.

"What does the Nobel Prize selection this year mean?" It means that certain Americans from certain universities and other areas of science will hopefully win the "prize". It also means a certain number of Europeans will also win, as well as hopefully some from other parts of the globe. It means that no one from crazy town USA will win anything.......

Of course most people want to help educate the less fortunate. Any citizen who doesn't see why most parents are more interested in educating their own kids instead of those 3-4 states away is fooling themselves about the reality of the situation.

Making sure our taxes are used appropriately is a main concern of many.

Sadly true. Partisan politics is hurting the nation in more ways than one.

"Compromise" between educating people and the number of people being killed? Are you serious?

I moved to a wealthy city so that my kids to go to excellent schools with smart kids with parents who actually care. Being around lots of other Jews is a win/win. I moved out of a neighboring city that while the schools were still highly rated the element was degrading rapidly. I didn’t want my kids surrounded by other kids that I generally didn’t want them being around. Sorry, don’t want my kids to be in class with the kinds of kids I saw in my former neighborhood or at the mall. It was worrying us so we did what we needed to do.

If my city had to give OUR tax dollars away to help a poor city in Louisiana I’d be a little pissed. In the end my kids come first and I can’t spend college level money on elementary, middle and HS. THATS CRAZY. But I know people doing it. Friends. Neighbors. They do it because they can afford it. Lucky them.

It might be inconvenient for you that this country was constituted to promote the general welfare. It has worked pretty well for it so far. So if you prefer a country that promotes your individual welfare, then you need to be aware that this one is not built for that.

You have, not only the right, but the obligation to put your family first. But the Constitution was written to protect us from making your personal priorities a "first" for everybody else. So... sorry.. but your taxes will go to wherever they are needed most in order to form a more perfect union

When Obama got the Nobel Prize for NOTHING, it cheapened it totally.

IMO y\there is no point in everyone paying to cast pearls before swine. Let people find their own natural level and pay for what they get,. Otherwise, they don't appreciate or use it well anyway.

We do okay in the hard sciences. But everything else is pretty much a joke. As for what the Nobel Prizes what it means is in the end the cream still rises to the top no matter how many obstacles leftist educators throw in the way. By the way Nobel prize winners say almost nothing about our over all education system. Where are we ein terms of over all literacy as compared to the rest of the developed world? How do our high school students do in math and science against the rest of the developed world? The answer sadly is not well.
