How to make open borders possible.

Learn to grow cocaine in the US and make it legal.
Failing that put drug smugglers in prison for life and support putting drug buyers in Mexican prisons.
Make marijuana legal across the US.
No market for drug smuggling gangs, no drug smuggling gangs.

Once borders are more or less open then workers, without their families, enter, work, make some money and go home just like they did for decades. They do jobs that few others want. By building walls all that is accomplished is that workers that used to cross for seasonal work now find it relatively easy to enter because the wall they climb is unsecured on the side that they climb and easy to descend on the other side. Walls are most effective to control on the side people are climbing up and because sneaking out of the country has become much more difficult they are now much more inclined to try and sneak their families in rather than leave in the off seasons. At the very least have an exit that is uncontrolled to allow unchecked exits for the undocumented that leave, Mexico doesn't care because no one is sneaking drugs into Mexico. Yes, I know that smuggling guns into Mexico is an issue but guns are far easier to detect if they become a problem.

Bottom line, spend efforts on dealing with the drug smugglers and pretend you don't see the workers sneaking in.

Mexico's biggest problem will be whatever the drug cartels create to make up the lost revenues.
