May I suggest you take advantage of other producers in other parts of the world that are not dependent on China. I saw Silicon Valley walk their products out of the Valley over to China too. They made a major mistake.

I'll let you research who signed NAFTA into law, and then you can realize how your constant partisan jabs just make you look ridiculous.

Now you are saying the American taxpayer will pay for Trump's tariffs. Right. If it isn't the taxpayer it is the American consumer. Brilliant plan.

"Those tariffs paid by American importers, later by American consumers, will be used to subsidize the soy bean farmers who lose out in the deal." American farmers don't want welfare. They want a level playing field, and an end to Trump's trade war.

In a related thread, a Trump fan said, "The trade deficit with China is a problem."

No, that is another lie Trump has told to his base because they are the only ones who will believe it. Trump is counting on his fans not using their common sense.

Most of his fans know that our economy is much larger than China's. What exactly does that mean? It means that American consumers buy a lot more products than Chinese consumers. It means that it is only logical we will buy more from China than they buy from us. That accounts for the trade deficit.

And the trade deficit is not a problem. It is good thing because it speaks to the overwhelming superiority of the American economy over the Chinese economy. The products our importers buy from China account for the trade deficit and are bought by American consumers in our vibrant economy.

Trump wants you to believe the trade deficit is money we are losing to China. That is a lie. The trade deficit is the product differential between China and the much larger U.S. economy.

Considering the success of our economy and our full employment, I will ask again. What is the problem Trump's tariffs are supposed to be solving? Why is he placing inflationary pressures on our economy? Inflation leads to recession.

You don't think I know Clinton betrayed the American worker class? Wow, you are ridiculous.

Who started NAFTA, Which party had been pushing for it to become law for a decade or more?
If you research that, you'll see how ridiculous you look.
I'll give you a person to start your research with. Ronald Reagan.

Trump thinks China pays the tariffs. ""Talks with China continue in a very congenial manner - there is absolutely no need to rush - as Tariffs are NOW being paid to the United States by China," he tweeted Friday.

Tariffs are paid by American importers who buy Chinese goods. The importers have two choices, absorb the expense or pass it along to American consumers. Generally, they do the latter.

Trump Seeks New $15 Billion Subsidy To Protect Farmers From Hi.png
Lolz. Taxpayers can't be forced to buy Chinese imports, and if those goods lose market share, or languish on warehouse shelves that's even better. Xi Ping will up his subsidizes just like he always has because Xi Ping's reign will outlive 4 or 5 more US administrations. China projects economic policies that extend decades into the future. Temporarily increasing subsidies to meet projected GDP goals is a religiously observed tactic, and is exactly where the trade negotiations grind to a standstill. Now if you'd like a lesson on crop futures too, just ask.

That is leaving out some of the facts. China agreed to terms, and then just before the meeting in the US, they suddenly changed their minds

It's tough to negotiate trade deals with China when it is always violating their agreements and going back on their word.

China has a history of unfair trade practices and dumping their products, to drive out competition. The WTO was supposed to hold China to account, but it has proven useless. Here is just one fairly recent incident: US Challenges China Over WTO Violation

Let's not play pretend here. The US has been sued more times within the WTO dispute system than China.

You are the one playing pretend. China violates the WTO when it steals intellectual property, dumps their products, and engages in unfair trade practices. China refuses to abide by the rules of the WTO, and the WTO is unable or unwilling to control China. If they would, then the US would not engage in WTO violations as they slap tariffs on Chinese products.

There is no denying that China is no friend of free trade. However, Americans whining about it- when the US is number 1 for being sued for unfair trade- really takes the biscuit.

How so? Are you really going to sit there and compare the US getting sued by the WTO, for example when the Obama admin was demanding country of origin labels on food products, or for slapping tariffs on China for dumping products?

If the WTO actually held China to account for it's violations, they would not still be engaging in the theft of intellectual property, and other unfair trade practices.

Up to 2018, the US managed to get sued over 3 times that of China. Its Europe that offers the most competition, but they only achieved 85 cases compared to the US's 150. Verdicts have led to the US losing 87% of cases. Why? Because the US has historically adopted unfair trade.

The Trump fans can indeed use this information. Okay, Trump is a cretin and cases have increased. However, given the US was also number 1 in WTO disputes before his election, he's not the only cretin!

"As we have noted for years, President Trump appears to have little understanding of trade and trade policy, even though it is an animating element of his presidency. As the trade war with China has heated up, the president’s itchy Twitter finger has been busy with a fusillade of false or misleading tweets. Whether the president knows these claims are untrue is unclear, but the overall effect is to create a distinct winner-takes-all narrative for his trade policy. Here’s a quick tour through some of the major themes."

“We have lost 500 Billion Dollars a year, for many years, on Crazy Trade with China. NO MORE!”

This is the Rosetta Stone of the president’s trade philosophy — that the United States has been ripped off by other countries for years.

But Trump consistently gets two things wrong here.

First, he overstates the trade deficit with China. It was $378 billion in 2018, $336 billion in 2017 and $308 billion in 2016. But for Trump, it’s always been $500 billion.

Given the rise in the trade deficit during his presidency, perhaps one day Trump will be right.

Second, countries do not “lose” money on trade deficits. A trade deficit simply means that people in one country are buying more goods from another country than people in the second country are buying from the first country. No matter what, people are receiving goods in exchange for their money.

Like I said, our violations are not of the same context as China. China's violations are theft, dumping products, putting unhealthy materials in their products, etc...

So please stop tossing around numbers and pretending that both nations are engaging in the same exact trade practices.

There is nothing wrong with politicians proposing a trade agreement like NAFTA, as long as the agreement is fair.

Actually, given the expense involved in the dispute settlement process, any case is substantive. Gosh, it's as if you're not even aware of the US's trade policy...

Bilateralism is a curse for free trade. Its ensured multilateralism has stalled and encouraged the likes of the US to attack WTO systems.

“Your all time favorite President got tired of waiting for China to help out and start buying from our FARMERS, the greatest anywhere in the World!”

Here Trump tries to take credit for solving a problem he created. His initial round of tariffs led China to stop purchasing soybeans and other agricultural products from the United States, resulting in steep losses for farmers. So Trump then scrambled to arrange a rescue package.

As of December, the government said, it cut nearly $9.6 billion in checks, including $7.3 billion to soybean farmers, $580 million to pork farmers and $554 million to cotton farmers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture also planned to spend $1.2 billion on purchases of surplus food and provide $200 million for trade promotion work by agriculture export groups.
    ...........................................................................................................................................
Now the idiot is proposing buying off farmers to the tune of $15B more in subsidies. Where is that $ coming from? Selling US treasuries to China. Brilliant! No wonder Don lost $1.17B while being a genius businessman...........in his own mind.

Agreed, it was not fair. It was the typical thing we see, as a result of hubris from our elected politicians. They were foolishly optimistic, seeing rainbows and Utopia if only it was passed it into law. Once they turned it political, then people became intransigent and didn't want to hear about anything but.... rainbows and lollipops.

For all those amazingly unfair trade deals, it seems America has prospered and reached greater heights than any nation in history.

Must be one of those happy situations where success has come despite their best efforts. go figger.
