I saw this for the first time yesterday, my apologies if it has already been posted. This, for me, is a shockingly tragic story. A little boy 8 years old died of what doctors have called a treatable form of Hodgkin's lymphoma as a result of parental neglect. The parents are now facing sentencing after a plea of involuntary manslaughter. Here are a couple of links, the first one is a brief description and opinion piece, the second (ABC News) speaks more to the plea and sentencing of the parents. ~ cafemom.com ~ ~ ABC News ~
It would have taken a while for him to die. If he didn't respond to cold medicine, the smart thing to do would have been to take him to the doctor! What kind of idiot parents are they?
I agree Mak, It is simply beyond my understand how anyone could allow this to happen to an innocent child.
I dont know if the parents were negligent. I cant imagine any parent thinking a child is in need and not getting help. I also cant imagine how horrifying it would be for a parent to realize a child was so ill that they needed medical attention and they didn't do everything in their power to get that child attended to or disregarded something they knew would kill their child. It not my place to judge them. God rest that child's soul.
They probably didn't have any healthcare coverage... We all know that the American healthcare system kills,... UHC is the only solution.
A cold does not take months to recover from. If the treatment isn't working, it is negligent not to seek further medical assistance.
A hit piece. And did you note the shot about not having health coverage? If you can't afford a trip to the doctor then you can't afford the coverage. These parents didn't recognize what was going on. I think it is cruel for them to be prosecuted for this. They're suffering enough already.
I didn't think about that. But, then, your childs health is more important than anything, although being hundreds of thousands in debt would be terrifying for most.
It came and went. Regardless, taking him to a doctor doesn't mean the doctor would have recognized what was going on. It's a terrible shame. But to compound the grief with prosecution is cruel and unusual. Yes, they have to live with it.
If any ought to be trialed, it ought to be all those unfair-minded folks and politicians (also known as "Conservatives") for being unwilling to implement a working, fair, and universally-accessable healthcare system. That boy died because of Conservative policies and ideas. To hell with'm!
This thread really isn't the place for petty partisan politics BS. And to set the record straight for anyone that is reading this and doesn't live in the U.S.. All these parents had to do was take this child to any public hospital, and treatment could not, and would not have been refused.
Like I said Mak, It could be so easy to say these parents are negligent and all but how can any of us draw a conclusion without knowing the full details of what the parents were thinking? We can sit back and say, (*)(*)(*)(*) that was negligent and I never would have done that, but do we honestly know they didn't know or did know? We can be pissed off the child died a needless death. That is a bottom line fact, but do we have enough information to know the parents didn't care enough? Not by what I read. I wont judge them. All I'm gonna say is God rest that child's soul.
Yeah right... Thousands upon thousands of Americans die every year because of "compassionate" Conservative policies and ideas. That these people even dare to show their faces in public is beyond me. They are the reason that that poor boy died.
This boy was sick and thru out the months he was fed cold meds, which obviously didn't do any good...... why didn't they take him to the ER? At least to get an idea of what could be wrong since the months going by of feeding this poor kid cold meds wasn't working..... They took him to a clinic, but was asked for $180, so they left. Why couldn't they have made payment arrangements if they didn't have the $ up front. The mother's parents gave them $87 to get the pit bull de-fleaed.... why didn't they ask grandmother if she could loan them some $ for the clinic to get their very sick son to a dr? Sorry, but when your kid is sick for months on end, you DO SOMETHING to get him medical help....... The ER's do not turn sick people away - certainly not a child and a dr looking at the swollen glands would have realized something serious was going on. Also, many hospitals - mine does - has a charity fund to help the low-income.
Usually I agree w/you - but not on this. They certainly recognized that as the months were going by, he wasn't getting any better and that should have told them that whatever it was wasn't going to go away on it's own he needed to see a dr and take him into the ER.....
No, he died b/c his parents didn't try hard enuf to get him to a dr! Can we just ONCE have a topic where politics isn't dragged into it?
Falena, as a parent myself and there's many more like me out there - when my child is sick and the crappy cold med that I had been feeding him for months isn't doing any good....... I would get a tad bit worried that m/b something other than a 'cold' is going on w/my child.... Well, for one thing - I would never have given my kid cold med for months. After a week, if there's no improvement - then I would do everything I could to get him to the dr...... or straight to the ER when he was really bad, so they could see what was happening on his worst days....... Months were going by and they did nothing but feed him cough syrup... sorry, in my book - that's negligence.
