Average female lifespan is 78 years, so if we choose to try to see the glass as half full, the grandma probably only had 13 years taken off of her lifespan and probably not her better years either.

I've heard stories about grandmas hitting their 11-year-old grandchildren with a stick for punishment, especially in more out of the way rural areas, so we may not know the full story. She could have been a grouchy old grandma and lost her patience.

I read an article a while back about the large number of grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. The premise of the article was that they had failed raising their own children. By that assumption it probably doesn't make them the best choice for another batch of kids.
