Like I said earlier, I suck at percentages...

Either way, 1.5 % is rampant by who's standard?

I think the issue is that many sexual assaults go unreported because of the fear of reprisals associated with reporting it.

I'm sure that is true, in the military, & in civilian life...

In fact, that a common point made in any presentation about rape & SA, that many cases go unreported, for a multitude of reasons...

However, by all facts and figures I've seen, while rape & SA does happen in the military, it seems to far less prevalent than in civilian life...

EDIT: Just to point it out, the figures in that report don't indicate any rampant rape in the military...

Of course it is. The mainstream media and many feminist groups use inaccurate or in some cases completely wrong statistics to attack the military. We know nothing of this case yet and are in no position to say what happened. False rape accusations happen all the time and its inappropriate for anyone, particularly the media, to assume that these women were in fact raped. We should wait until a trial to make such declarations or insinuations. An article sensationalizing sexual assault in the military was posted and I directly refuted how inaccurate this article was. It was perfectly representative of how the media/feminist attack on the military/men. Someone tried to use this incorrect article to prove that sexual assault is rampant in the military. This article and that insinuation are wrong.

1 in 4 women has at one point in their life...been sexually assaulted, which is a staggering statistic....

Something like 15% of female college students claim to have been raped...

So yes, it's rampant in all aspects of the culture. I would not say it is more prevalent in the military, probably statisically fewer.

There's no question that some assaults/rapes aren't reported, which is tragic. On the other hand there are many false accusations out there. I know someone that was imprisoned for two years falsely because of such a rape accusation. The military judge and prosecutor were found to be grossly negligent and an investigation was launched. Of course the likes of CNN won't report something like this because it doesn't fit into their agenda. Rape is a bad thing, there's no question. But false rape claims are often just as bad, and over exaggerating a problem can lead to dangerous overcompensation. We should look at the raw numbers rationally, which is difficult to do with the mainstream media.

    Very true...

Also, in reference to this case, it won't make it far, as current or former military members are not allowed to sue the government...

    Also true...

It seems that the media will only report stories about this sort of thing that are damaging to the military...

They never seem to offer any counterpoint or counterresearch on the subject...

    Very biased indeed...

If there are 19000 rapes and sexual assaults in the US military with just over 2 million members(half or more of them men) and there were 89,000 rapes in the whole of the USA in 2009 reported within a female population of about 160 million then that says the problem in the US military is much higher.

That's bogus, you're using rapes and sexual assaults combined for the military statistic and only rapes for civilian statistics...

I've already pointed out that 15% of female college students claim to have been raped; 1 in 4 women claim to have been sexually assaulted at one point in their life...

    1 in 4.

Often times, it's simply not reported.

The military is very proactive on this issue, I posted various resources that service personnel can access to get information on the topic...the climate of fear of reporting is being addressed.

Will the statistic ever be 0%?

Probably not, but it's dubious at best to claim the military harbors a greater likelihood for a man or woman to be sexually assaulted as compared to civilians.

You're purposely skewing the statisitics to favor your argument.

And where have you pulled those figures from?

I can't find anything that says there were 19,000 rapes in the military in any given year...

    Exactly...

I'll never understand the idea of being dishonest to support an argument, when, in this day & age, the information can easily be researched and countered, very quickly...

OK,so there are 19000 sexual assaults including rapes in the US military with a membership of just over 2 million members. There were 207,000 sexual assaults in the whole USA with a population of 320 million. Thus the US military comes out on top.

That breaks down to under 1%...

    That is not rampant...

Why don't you tell it to the women getting raped and sexually assaulted,I am sure they would disagree with you. The US military has a higher rate of sexual assault that normal US civilian life.

683,000 per year....just rapes...not including the total statistic of sexual assaults as a whole....

    It's rampant in the culture.

Well we have 2 set of figures then.Mine are taken from U.S. Department of Justice. National Crime Victimization Survey. 2006-2010.Your figures come from 1992.

11 Kilpatrick, DJ, Edmunds, CN and Seymour, A. 1992. Rape in America: A Report to the Nation, Arlington, VA: National
    Victim Center.

I think you did not even check your source.

    No, it does not...

And why would they have problem with me saying that it's not rampant?

    It's not...

And that's not a good counter...

Could you please show me how <1% is rampant?

    Also, see Herk's post above...

    683,000/yr...

1 in 4 women will be raped during her lifetime...

That is much higher than 1%...

If you count the total population, that's like 20%+...

The military numbers are not even close...

Even for the time frame it's in...

Again, in the military, the rate is less than 1%...

That is not even close to rampant, no matter how you slice it...

And no matter how many figures you pull up, this is still a dishonest attempt at demonizing the military...

It is higher than in US civilian life so yes it is rampant.

I fail to see that a statistic that is 20 years old...would therefore be irrelvant.

The vast majority of sexual assaults which occur, the victim knows their attacker...therefore most go unreported.
    He's only using reported statistics.

Really? Well consider that rapes and sexual assault have gone down. You posted up 20 year old figures and are now trying to cover your ass. You should have done a bit more research and used up to date figures like I did. This is a debate about now not 1992.

    No, it's not...

    Good God...

Just yesterday, I posted a figure that said every few minutes, in the civilian sector, a rape is reported...

Then, I showed you a figure that said that same figure in the military was like once every four hours...

The civilian component has a much higher frequency...

I have provided the stats and they say you are wrong. I have posted the stats from the dept of defence on sexual assaults in the US military and I have posted stats from the dept of justice. You are wrong but please carry on denying reality.
