In fairness, based on the value of the services provided, paying Rudy zero seems fair

Yes, I know. It was intentional.

Don't jump out of character, because, I, as Pence, sensed where you were going, which would have put me in a particular box I did not want to be in, and I acted as I believe Pence would. See, it's not so much that Pence wants to retire from politics, he's conceiving of, as an expedient move, a way to extricate himself from Trump, and the only logical thing he could think of was the spiel about retiring. He could un-retire once he has extricated himself from the Trump grip. There is plenty of time to do that. See, Pence knows Trump is toast, and he is shrewd, he has no incentive to help him much. None. He probably also knows he has no future in politics. His being a Trump toadie for so long, he will never be able to sever himself from the epic Trump toxin. My gut feeling is that he is going to retire so it's really not pretense. But, I don't really know.

What a miserable end for a disastrous presidency! Trump managed to self-destroy in the most complete way.
I saw a picture of a smiling Obama and Michelle receiving Trump and Melania in the White House... Even Obama thought "let's give the man a chance." It's incredible the extent to which Trump blew it! This time, the transition of power won't have smiling faces from the outgoing president and his wife...

The Dems are doing the right thing, impeaching him and trying to convince their senatorial counterparts to help convict him, due to the enormity of what he did, in his attack on democracy. If this is not impeachable, nothing is. But as a matter of fact, if they don't convict him in the Senate and don't stop him from running again, he will be the gift that keeps on giving, for the Dems. Trump retaining his political rights to run from office will only mean the doom of the Republican Party, and a very easy win for the Democrats in 2024. Not to forget the optics of GOP senators voting to acquit, after such despicable behavior by Trump.

For the GOP, the survival strategy is to get rid of Trump; excise the cancer. For the Dems, Trump remaining around would be advantageous, because he will damage the GOP either by running again with them (thus getting in the way of more viable candidates) or with a third party. In either situation, the Dems will win.

Agreed, but how he negotiates for those votes, IMO, depends entirely on how much additional evidence comes out and the strength of the House's case presented to the Senate. Mitch is primarily a good tactician, when he had voting strength he was reluctant to negotiate at all. Now, he's lost his role as Majority Leader and knows that with less voting strength and the ability to set the Senate agenda, he'll have to compromise more with Schumer. Trump is practically without political power as of January 20th and is more likely, IMO, to be in jail, rather than a potential Presidential candidate, before the next Presidential election. Plus, he's 74 years old and I'd bet not as healthy as he'd like everyone to believe. Plus, he's going to be fighting law suits and possibly potential bankruptcy. Four hundred million less two hundred million in money raised for his election fight, still leaves two hundred million of debt. One of his big donors just died (Shelton Adelsen). Big corporations are pulling away. Netanyahu's political problems are going to soak up a lot of money with a new Israeli election. Deutsche Bank has deserted him. And, on and on. IOW, he has little to offer Mitch for the next two years and by that time he'll no longer be a political force.
And, Mitch can count...both money and votes. But, he's not charismatic and probably knows it. He needs a coalition in the Senate with a new Republican faction and could be the Minority Leader that brings more charismatic Republican moderates together with genuine charismatic Republic conservatives to defeat the former Trump supporters in the Senate, who are likely to be running for the hills to avoid going down with Trump.
Just my opinion. American politics isn't bean bags and has always been tough.

Very good post. Half of it, I had thought of already and posted about these points. The other half, I hadn't thought of, and I learned from you. Thanks.

I think they fear the loss of their pin cushion. They are getting in their last licks. Who knows they may follow him into private life.

The Democrat idiots in Congress would rather waste time and our money going after Trump when he's out of office in 168 hours. Maybe they should try to do something to fix the Covid economy. Anyone in Congress who wastes time on impeachment needs to be voted out in 2022.

Hey, great idea. Maybe to be on the safe side we should also vote out everybody who created this situation in the first place, by spreading the outrageous lies that the election was stolen. How about that?

In the smaller print down on the bottom of the page they do talk about additional possibilities.

Oh no doubt they'll do their utmost to make Trump's life a living hell. I'm just hoping the 'Pubs take over the House in two years and find any kind of excuse to impeach Biden or probably by then President Harris.

I guess. I can't find my own link now, and don't have the time to look it up (having a short snack break).

Why the surprise? Yes, absolutely, blatant lies. All debunked conspiracy theories. Unsurprisingly. We all know it's all BS. There was no widespread fraud. I do understand you guys seem to believe in the Kool-Aid the president sent your way, and I pity you for it. Hopefully one day you'll wake up.

Good luck finding 17 Dems willing to convict Biden or Harris. On the other hand it is not entirely impossible that this time 17 Republicans will be willing to convict Trump. Unlikely, sure; impossible, no, although for this to happen, Mitch needs to strongly want it and actively pursue it behind closed doors.
