After about a year and a half of being a biology major and getting a couple of raises and advancements in my job I too dropped for a "few semesters" because I was making good money and partying at night in my apartment and driving a nice car and just thinking what am I going to do with a biology degree. I had worked since I was 14 years old when the druggist down the street hired me to sweep the floors. My first two jobs were in right to work states. Yet I was "forced" to join a union and pay dues. The first was through a phony "apprenticeship" program so that all the shop employees had to be hired as apprentices through the union. After the first year we were told the union had just signed an new contract, without a vote. Me and another guy fought to get out and were sent through hopes and then the company shut down. The next was at a shipyard where it was very bluntly put you either join the union or a wrench is going to fall from about 3 decks up.

All unions ever did was hold me back in promotions and wages.

Moved to Chicago, a BIG union town, and worked in management at a light manufacturing company. Got an education in union negotiations when they came up and watched as the union business managers met secretly with the owners and worked out a deal. Then the union and company went through all the motions of a "negotiations" with the workers and shop stewarts and the union telling the the company was trying to screw them and they were fighting for them and just played them along to the agreed upon third vote when the union told them THIS is the contract they should agree too and it was what the union business managers and company owners had agreed to weeks previously. They workers never had a clue.

if you were a worker you'd understand the major difference between a raise and a bonus.

Perhaps we can get actual even competition for a change. I knew progressives would be pissed about this.

What makes you think I don't? I know of them from both sides as a payer and a recipient. I've worked at companies where about 20% of the yearly paid was an end of the year bonus based on company performance. I now work a mix of a base salary and commission which comes out about 40/60. What are you saying I do not understand?

Great. Those folks that sold their shares at a premium will put that money back into the economy more effectively than the gov could have.

That's not true gamewell and you know it. All contracts state the exact amount an employee at a certain skill level or position must be paid, no exceptions, I'm sure you'll agree to that. But do you know how long it would take to gather all the company and union people involved to sit down at the last minute (I'm assuming these bonuses are for Christmas) and with the way the CWA operates, I can tell you right off the bat they would have a problem with a non precedent setting, non citable one time bonus as they would attempt to tie it to any future tax reductions. Also, as of right now there is no mechanism for the CWA to get their cut so they'd have to go back to their members and tell them they're getting a bonus minus the CWA's slice and it would have to be voted on. It's possible the union could work out a deal and simplify the entire process, but with 48,000 unionized workers represented by several unions and many locals while we only have one bargaining team nationwide, this deal could easily take 6 months or longer. And that cookie is still crumbling.

Why should federal taxes pay for roads or airports? Fuel taxes are being inappropriately spent by states. My state just increased fuel taxes while reducing grocery taxes do that taking care of roads would be removed from the general fund.

I've already been hearing about spending reform.

Yep. I'm sure the workers see right through it. They're gonna throw those bonuses right back in their faces. They'll refuse their bullshit tax cut too.

Sadly, none of that surprises me. There was some controversy here about the contract being approved without the presidents voting or something like that, but the legacy Directv techs were on top in the end. We got to keep our seniority over the ATT wiretechs. We got to keep our pension and start the ATT pension up. We did lose piece rate, but they are probably at 24$ hr now or soon to be. g2g

Steve, all skill levels have contractual minimums specified; I've dealt with CWA before and most, if not all of their labor agreements specify contract minimums which means they cannot pay less then what is specified; that being said, I've personally done numerous non-precedent, non-citable agreements over many years involving CWA and not once was the agreement ever rejected by the International Union. Union dues are based on a percentage of the employee's gross pay so if a bonus was to be paid out, the dues would be calculated accordingly. Even if it were to take six months or longer, there is still no reason why the company cannot begin the process with the various unions. I just think your excuse is very flimsy and it appears from the tenor or your original post that you don't want them to get a bonus because they are union represented. The cookie is still crumbling here as well.

I like you a lot and will not be snarky.

The long term effect is due to the fact that consumers, not government, grow the economy. Employees are consumers. We pay a lot of taxes. We pay income tax, fuel tax, sales tax, sin tax, prepared food tax etc. Spending money in your town increases the revenue of your town. Distributive rather than centralized taxation. Also the local businesses increase revenue which typically improves service and drives competition. On the flip side, reducing the size and cost of the ineffective federal government is a good thing. Put those funds toward what they do well and is necessary for our protection. Lastly, come 2021 in an ideal world, a cut to entitlements.

It is a big tangled web. We can belabor each junction, but suffice it to say, a large, all powerful centralized bureaucracy is bad for the people. A union of autonomous states with a small binding central authority is good. You can choose your local government. Americans should never have to choose which country to pledge because of economic hardship. That is what America is supposed ro be... the alternative to oppressive governance.

According to our 438 page contract, the employees give 1.5 of their hourly pay to the union every two weeks. There are no bonuses for the employees because folklore has it they gave them up permanently for a one time raise figuring that was more guaranteed than possible bonuses of unknown amounts n the future. My company and the CWA has a rocky relationship, I can't speak about the other unions we deal with. And personally, I have no problem with the techs getting a bonus, that would tell me my company is financially healthy. There's that darn cookie again.

ATT has a bonus program called myrewards I think. Its been awhile. It is merit based along with sales commissions. It is only a fraction of what Directv had in place as a bonus program for techs.

My dear liberal friends. The money you do not pay in taxes is yours to do with as you wish. I strongly suggest that if you worry about the national debt, and our childrens burden, you donate your savings to it. https://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/resources/faq/faq_publicdebt.htm#DebtFinance

You put your money where your mouth is and I personally guarantee you every conservative on this board will hold you, at least, as principled and a good American. Otherwise, gfy.

lets hope we see a trend, I would like each company to release how much they got from the tax cut and how much they are trickling down

and raising hourly pay to $15... from what was it before.... if $12, that is a big raise, if $14.75 not so big

this is a wait and see what the corps do, pass on the windfall or keep it for themselves - short and long term

the Trump admin promised the average American would get about 4k more a year on their paycheck, let hope it's true

"Trump says corporate tax cuts will mean $4,000 extra in your pocket. Economists aren’t so sure."

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...xtra-in-your-pocket-economists-arent-so-sure/

"the median household would get a $4,000 income boost over eight years. Hassett has also said that a cut in the corporate tax rate — from 35 percent to 20 percent — would boost wage growth, adding up to $7,000 in income."

Perhaps it would behoove both sides to develop a working partnership as opposed to one of adversarial.
