How much education does it take to pick celery, lettuce and almonds?

California isn't the only state that has become concerned with graduation rates instead of passing on knowledge to the students. No one cares anymore what the students learn or even if they learn anything. We as a nation continue to slide down this slippery path.

Every day California does something that just bewilders me. This false sense of security in the form of a diploma will hurt many as they present themselves to the workforce or College and find out they're not really qualified for either.

Hey, look at the bright side, principals and administrators won't have to cheat any more. Think about how many principals this could potentially keep out of jail. There is no more accountability for mass failures.

What are the standards to get into a institution of higher learning? Certainly wouldn't want to offer a scholarship to a graduate from California. I guess they will have to go Berkley.

My kid was in 8th grade when we moved out of California, but back then it was common knowledge that the exit exams tested students on an 8th grade level, a solid 8th grader could pass the high school exit exam.

I hope the good people of California now realize their high school diplomas will have no value.

Nonsense. That MIGHT apply if you're studying fluff (social studies, art appreciation, basket weaving), but STEM is rote and facts/memorising. Diagnostics is different, but it still requires the collation of all those rote learned facts, and the sifting through for the right one. That is learned on the job .. it doesn't happen at school.

But since you're okay with people who just 'learned to think', next time you need surgery, use a 'surgeon' who thought his way to the job.

    And FTR, I'm a lefty.

Why is that? Lots of states don’t do these exams.

Because if you don't have pass a test, there's no guarantee the "graduate" has any knowledge at all.

Half of all grads think we fought France in the Revolutionary War and can't do simple algebra. I don't see how dropping the test will reverse this sad situation.

Of course not... I wonder if that U of Tampa professor is blaming those fires on CA voting overwhelmingly for Clinton...

Can be said about most states. Of course Massachusetts seems to always be the highest when it comes to education.

No doubt they'll follow the "Oprah" example for HS degrees: "You get a degree! You get a degree! and You get a degree!"

The smart ones will pass college entrance exams, the not-so-smart ones will work in the "service" industry and protest minimum wage rates.

I don't think there should be an exit test and generally oppose standardized testing. That does not mean I do not favor high quality education and testing for classes. Rather, if a person attends 12 years of school with passing grades they should receive a diploma, rather than going for 12 years and told it was for nothing because they were in bad schools with bad teachers.

Disagreed. I'm a tax payer and want accountability on how tax dollars are spent.

Yes, but to be fair to the state government of California all they require of their hordes of leftist tools from their indoctrination centers -- California public schools -- is that they always vote . . . Left. Or in other words, the peasants don't need no stinkin' education.

Let me tell you why I think CA is doing this, but first, if Moonbeam really thought this was a good idea then why doesn't he eliminate final exams in all CA colleges?

The reason why Moonbeam is doing this is simple; Illegals

Uneducated illegals by the tens of thousands come here who can't even habla no less pass a math test. So what does CA do with 12, 14 or 16 year old kids who have no education at all? If those kids were put in first grade where they belong there would be riots and CA would be the laughing stock of the country. In order to properly educate them they would need their own schools and teachers and that would cost a fortune. Knowing they'll never get the money for extra schools and teachers, the teacher's unions probably pushed for this because it removes accountability and stress from the teachers and they can rubber stamp each kid up to the next grade. What surprises me about all this are the professional educators with the Ph.D.s who are letting politicians decide what an education should be.

This stunt was sorta predicted a few years ago when CA dumbed down the exit exams to the point of almost being a useless assessment of a student's knowledge. Then LA county gave out diplomas to 22,000 minority students who 'almost made it." (remember that one?) And now CA does this. If you think about it, it's a slap in the face to everyone who actually wants an education.

California should be embarrassed by all this.

We are in agreement as to why California has done this.

What we are seeing is the slow motion creation of a new Venezuela in real time, in that all Californians have got to do in order to correctly predict their ultimate future under ever more radicalizing leftist rule is look at that leftist created horror of a nation. Different means are being used in California and the steps have been baby steps to date, but those steps have mounted up over the decades and the state is moving ever closer to the famous Consequences Pit of No Return. It's sad but it is also reality.

Let them implode as an example to others.

"It is one of the happy incidents of the federal system that a single courageous State may, if its citizens choose, serve as a laboratory; and try novel social and economic experiments without risk to the rest of the country." -- Justice Louis Brandeis
