It would at least save California from part of it's trillion dollar pension deficit. California public universities already have zero admission standards, and what are the prerequisites for gender studies anyway? Give 'em all Phd's ...

Until the Mexican army invades California, and plants a flag, California is still part of the US, and so are its citizens, bigots be damned.

Certainly not when the liberals providing it fail to provide much of it.

Of course they'll "get by" ... that's the point of eliminating scholastic standards. So why put on a multi billion dollar a year charade? Unemployed teachers will get by too, and Californians can use the property tax relief. California won't need unskilled illegal workers if they produce their own. Supply and demand for unskilled workers will halt illegal entry entirely ... well, except for the drug traffickers who'll supply the ignorant, impoverished masses.

I graduated from high school in California back in 1968. There was no exit exam back in the day. But back in 68 California's schools were rated the best in America.

In the high school district where I attended, everyone in high school took the SAT in their senior year, everyone.

In Mexifornia today most schools, there are some exceptions but most schools are nothing more than daycare centers. Mexifornia is already graduating some really stupid people. All you have to do is pay attention how they vote at the polls.

There is quite a shocking percentage of high school graduates who cannot read. Maybe this fact has some influence in their decision?

Of course if you have exams as the measure of success in higher education you'll expect someone to do well when they've spent years taking exams in high school. But that doesn't go to my point about continuous assessment as against examinations. On the second point, why compare students across states and nations? I've never really understood why that's important. Leaving that aside, comparisons can still be made if they have to be, the form of assessment doesn't stop that.

So you don't understand why anyone would want to compare the ability of students, but if they do, there is a better way than standardized testing?

I'm sorry, but I don't see that you've made a very clear argument throughout this thread. I struggle to understand what the agenda is for the no test types such as yourself, and it seems a big step backwards to go without it. I suppose for the purposes of this thread, it doesn't matter since California is at the bottom of US states in education; a sad state of affairs for a state that depends on so many high tech industries. If you're at the bottom, I suppose there is no point in any testing at all.

So it's like plopping children down in front of a TV then?

Here, sit through 4 years of nonsense, nod your head, and here's your free 2nd Authentic Vynil handbag with purchase. *Oops, meant degree*

It doesn't take a genius to see where the problems in the world are, it just takes someone that isn't a brain dead drone for either side of the isle.

In California, "critical thinking" means "who's the racist?"

I did say I didn't understand why the need for comparison. If someone can enlighten me I'd appreciate it.
Also Mike I'm not a "no test", I'm all for assessment, learning without assessment is ridiculous. I'm saying there are better ways of assessment than final year examinations for high school students.

Back when I lived in CA it was well known they did whatever they could to get kids out of school, i.e. they're lowered the standards for graduation, dumbed down exit exams, LA gave diplomas to kids who didn't qualify and so on. So it's possible those kids went off to some college financed with student loans only to either drop out or otherwise fail to graduate. So now they're stuck with these loans and either a low paying job or none at all and they're defaulting on their loans. Worse still, the kids liberals want to make life easy for seem to be the ones defaulting the most.

If they keep dumbing down what it takes to graduate then more dumb kids will try to go to college and fail. Take a look at this:

This is what unopposed leftism gets you.

The erosion is equally bad in the "colleges".

    That's not how government works.

In America the wealthy have access to better. When it comes to public education, outside of private donations, outcomes should be roughly equal.

America is a small sample. In my western, somewhat-socialist democratic nation, public schools are more or less equal, and do better academically than private schools. Likewise our public hospitals are better than our private.

That's for those who even make it past the 9th grade. If you check the chart below, you'll find most southern red states are towards the bottom of the list.
