Again: The public elects who ever is the most popular. If you go ask around in your neighborhood I doubt that most people who go vote, have policy based arguments why they choose an individual. And this is the same here: "He smiled so nice." "I like her." "He is in the same church as me." "She is from my state/town." or whatever the reason may be. Too few people actually look at the policies and credentials to elect. Therefore the stupid charismatic speakers end up in high office, not the smart capable ones. It is even more extreme since TV is everywhere.

The HDI doesn't represent the achievement of the factory workers though. That is the problem! And the HDI doesn't represent the progress a country made in terms of civil liberties and civil rights. However a few individuals did change the civil liberties and civil rights for millions. John Locke for example.

About 15% of our society here in Austria holds at least an advanced degree. Out of these 15% come most politicians, most discoveries, and most progress for the country. Out of the other 85% of our society there are hardly any contribution for civil liberties or civil rights. And the same is true in the US I'd think.

See the problem is that we created a stale system in which everybody goes through basically the same system of education. When you're 6 years old you learn how to write and read, when you're 18 you go to college, etc. etc.
The system makes it close to impossible to choose a different age to start your education, therefore instantly limiting the mind of those who're capable, by forcing them to learn at the same speed as the classmates.

In Austria education is free. Even colleges are free. Tuition is about $450 per semester for those who can afford it. Basically the system tries to give everybody the opportunity to get a college education. 50% of all the college students have at least one parent who has an advanced degree. Although the system is trying to provide as much as it can, it still can't change the fact that the number one reason to graduate from college is the wealth of your parents. This I'd imagine is even more true in the US.

While we may act like everybody has the same opportunities in life in either of our societies, it just isn't true. If you're born into a wealthy family or not makes a huge difference. Never mind if you're born into some minority who has to still fight for their rights!

Therefore it is nice to have a high HDI but unfortunately it doesn't change the fact that about 80% of the society never gets the opportunity to make or take advantage of the progress I'm advocating. Not only that, but usually these 80% they are completely ignored by our fine fine democracies...

Why don't you just answer the question? I think I know why.
"Ignoring the multiple parts of the Bible that say to kill all gays, but still believing in the book, how is that different than a Nazi who ignores an inconvenient part of Mein Kampf but still believes in the book?"

The misdirection and obfuscation is even stronger.
