You have to assume Chinese will stop eating because it cost more to eat. I don't think so. They will pay whatever it takes and blame their government for it which the government can't afford so these tarrifs are a bluff.

NO! This is decidedly NOT what you should be looking at.

No, he's just stupid....let me repeat, he is stupid. Starting trade wars is stupid. Yes, there should be negotiations with China, there are some legitimate concerns that should be dealt with. Going directly into a trade war is just stupid...and the Chinese are not stupid, they will respond in kind.

Aaaand I called it, tariffs are as close to socialist as a government can get. You artificially try an help a dying industry(Steel), and it will only be paid for by someone else now(Farmers). Which had nothing what so ever to do with the steel industrys poor business decisions.

I asked what happened last time we tried tariffs? Hmm?

I don't need to assume anything. The Chinese will continue to eat albeit a smaller percentage of their diet will be food exported from the US. Losers: farmers and Chinese consumers. Winners:not us

Only if you're a liberal/socialist progressive who depends on their noise machine to learn what to whine about.

Wrong, only if you have a clue about economics. You cannot ascertain much at all from bilateral deficits. This is simply a fact.

You think Brazil is producing a surplus of soybeans that can replace what we sell to China? China buys about 50% of our production you believe there is a worldwide surplus that can replace that?

Not entirely. It is well documented the CIA has worked with drug lords in the battle against communism in banana republics. In fact, Slick Willie was involved in Mena Arkansas.

Here's a thread with numerous books and videos regarding the subject matter. There's not a lot of links to this as it predates dial up internet.

Because it costs too much to make American version of certain goods, and as such, it makes them inefficient in the market place. It's simple free market principles from Adam Smith. He did say, and it was something Americans, particularly republicans used to embrace, that the lower the price of goods, the more efficient the economy and thus the better off people are. Is that principle no longer accurate?

China does not need our food imports to "feed it's people."

The reason wealthy nations import food is to get the most variety at the lowest cost. The US doesn't need to import food to feed us either. We import food so we can have year round access to a wide variety of food at the lowest possible cost. Most demand for food imports go to the middle and upper class of any nation.

If the US and China fed it's people without any imports, our diet would be less varied is all. The US produces plenty of corn, beef, pork, chicken and wheat to sustain our population year round. We may have times of the year without certain fruits and vegetables, however. But no one would starve. The same is true in China, they produce enough food to feed their people year round.

How you fail to see this baffles me. It either reeks of ignorance of basic economics or a willing distortion to support your boy in the White House.

I suggest you get a clue about economics then.

Also, I haven't suggested anything about bilateral deficits. I've been talking about the economics of the issue. Better than accepting the doomsday scenario's being pushed by the left's MSM sources looking to generate ad revenue from their target audience.

You seem to be under the illusion that we have no tarrifs at present besides the ones Trump is proposing.

"Presently 30% of all import goods are subject to tariffs in the United States, the rest are on the free list. The "average" tariffs now charged by the United States are at a historic low. The list of negotiated tariffs are listed on the Harmonized Tariff Schedule as put out by the United States International Trade Commission.[62]"

Before Reagan and before nafta tarrifs were the rule of the day. Free trade is relatively new in America and we have seen it's shortcomings as well as it's benefits. Might be time to back off a little.

You assume there is excess food production in the world and China can simply buy elsewhere. Do you think they have been buying our food out of the goodness of their heart or because we have it for sale when others dont?

You have to assume that soybeans are literally the only thing the Chinese people can eat to make this statement, which is beyond stupid.

Wrong on every level. China has a huge population to feed and produces very little of it's own food. They depend on us for their food basics.

You have to assume soybeans is the only food china has put tarrifs on. Is that what you think?

No I wouldn't, because we aren't the only country to export to them. A bunch of you geniuses don't seem to realize that the United States can be replaced in most goods and commodities markets.

I'm still baffled healthier first world country's even import our Roundup poison, titled "food".

The fact these tariffs impact our farmers so poorly is a bit surprising to me. I didnt know other nations wanted to be plagued with diabetes, obesity, cancer, siliak disease, autisum and all the other ills we voluntarily ingest.

Once again you seem to think china put tarrifs on nothing but soybeans. Their threatened tarrifs are in a very !ong list of food and they are not going to stop eating and they can't suddenly buy it elsewhere. There's not warehouses full of soybeans, pork, chicken etc just waiting to be sold.
