They did during the depression, and in the 2008 crisis.

I gave a number earlier which is something not one shut down proponent has done.

Australia was hit by this in their summer which gives us hope that this virus like the flu will dissipate for us this summer

    Oh
I love those who do not bother to research facts

Brazil is in the middle of summer

    upload_2020-5-14_7-25-12.jpeg

Singapore is struggling with the outbreak

    upload_2020-5-14_7-27-24.jpeg

Our cases went down because we locked down early and we locked down HARD. Under 100 deaths so far

    And yet other countries have

But you are right it is about minimising impact on health care facilities because the survival rates are higher if the numbers are lower and not just that but it does leave room to treat non covid cases

You can't compare tropical environments to the hot arid environment of an Australian summer.

No hospitals in America ran out of ventilator or room capacity but it was touch and go in NY for a while. Half the counties in America have no covid deaths which have been concentrated largely in NY and a few other areas. We have shut the entire country down for them. My county largely ignored the shut down order by our leftist governor and we have had zero deaths.

Only 600 dead in AZ and you have to remember AZ is not isolated like Australia. It has a steady stream of people from other states bringing the virus with them.

If you think a tropical environment is comparable to a desert environment that is your folly to commit.

You made me curious so I looked.
Early? Not really. You were behind California and NY.
Hard? Sounds the same as our lockdown
SYDNEY (REUTERS) - Australia began living under strict new lockdown rules on Monday (March 23

To here will be no more going to the pub after work, no more going to the gym in the morning, and no more sitting down for brunch at a cafe,” Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison told Parliament on Monday. "

6 x S Korea's, which would be 1800 annually. S Korea has 1/6 of our population and has a total of about 300 deaths in this year so far, but are having lots less lately. Maybe 3000 annually to adjust for that.

And that's only until we get a treatment and/or vaccines.

It's not going away but the amount of deaths can be brought way WAY down if you have proper treatment. Preliminary figures from some areas say the actual death rate is .25 to .5% if you have properly equipped and functioning hospitals and you can have functioning hospitals if the hospitals are not being overwhelmed.

Trump want this to "burn itself out" since he has big investments in things that stand to make a lot of money if thousands of us die. Don't join him, you might very well be one of the sacrifices.

Until S. Korea drops the ball, as may already have happened:

"Officials in South Korea said Wednesday several new nightclub-related cases of COVID-19 have emerged and thousands of potentially exposed people have yet to be tested.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 26 new cases were recorded Tuesday, with 18 traced to clubs and bars in Seoul's multicultural Itaewon neighborhood. An additional eight cases were reported by noon Wednesday, bringing the total related to the clubs to 119.

Health officials were placed on high alert last week when a 29-year-old clubgoer tested positive for COVID-19 after having visited five Itaewon clubs, potentially exposing thousands. Testing so far has confirmed 76 patients who attended the Itaewon clubs and 43 who were infected through secondary transmission."

The death rate measured by antibody tests in NY is about .8% - .9%

US hospitals are not overwhelmed and there are plenty of ventilators (not that they are especially useful).

What are those investments? I want to invest in them too.

The only way out is through. There are no treatments. There are no vaccines. You can push deaths into the future, but a million or more will die in this country even if you elect that Gawd-Help-Us Biden.

    3,000 annually?
That's roughly nine deaths per day. The flu kills more than thst, much more.
So do you think that's a realistic number in America and if so how long do you think it would take to get there. Do you honestly believe our economy wouldnt be in absolute shambles by then and we'd be so deep in depression it would take decades to get out of it?
Next question would be if deaths ticked up would you shut down the economy again?

Autumn, actually. And our coldest state (snow on the ground already) has some of the least COVID.

Now is not when the virus hit Australia. It was months ago and never got a good foothold.

    S. Korea does it, so can we

It took S. Korea about a month, but we do have a lot of people sick. I think about a year is a realistic figure.

We don't have to be in lockdown to do this. Again. S Korea is coming out of theirs now and they've only had it in as long as we have so far..

I don't think there will be any Depression. There is no structural cause for this to last past the lockdown end.

If the Deaths ticked up the response would depend upon the reason. A new lockdown might be appropriate or maybe not. We can burn that bridge when we come to it

Inquiring minds want to know why countries like China and India that have many millions more people than The United States have the same number of cases as US states like Illinois and Massachusetts, could it be that we have Trump and they don't? Do you think president Trump would consider that a nasty question? It certainly would be if I was an Asian woman.
