Well if you don’t believe me there’s nothing I can do I graduated at the top of my class in high school and I could not even apply to Harvard or Yale or Princeton.The girls in New York City had to have a higher average than the boys to get into the city universities. Do you think all these changes came about in a vacuum? I love the way you spelled Harvard to show your contempt but that doesn’t surprise me.....

 

You are very naïve to believe that for hundreds of years telling blacks and women that they are second class citizens that suddenly they are viewed with the same respect. It was less than 60 years ago that blacks were defined as inferior. It was less than 60 years ago that women were denied equality. It will take several generations for racism and sexism to end. Young people do not have all the racism and sexism that their parents and grandparents and great grandparents carry. I see it in my prejudice workshops when I work with high school kids and I am thrilled to see the changes.

Do you think women would be getting paid and having the opportunities they have without a woman’s movement? Do you think Obama would be president without the civil rights movement? They Haven’t repeatedly been discredited but people who are given the label of hate crimes are fighting it. To say they shouldn’t use their data because if a few mistakes is silly...that’s what they do! What do you think their motive is? Your personal myth is that you would have gotten into Harvard except for sexism. Being the top of your class in high school doesn't cut it. It does explain your crazed bitterness though. Some people need to construct these myths in order to justify their failures in life.

I remember telling my students that girls needed a 90 average to get into Brooklyn college and the boys needed an 85.The kids said, “I bet you were angry” and I said to them, “not at all because I didn’t have a raised conciousnessl Why do you suppose that these top male universities started accepting women?out of the goodness of their hearts ? These universities are very prestigious and have incredible networking systems.

 

No it is not several generations. Women in the 1970s couldn’t get a credit card in their own names once they got married.
