Why, they don't have to wait for him to pull the gun if it appears he is going for one and we according the FOX this more the 911 call was about him and his threatening people and taking the car keys of someone and the police knew before they got there there was also a warrant out for him. And then the "drop the knife", a knife is a weapon.

 

He was armed according to the evidence and gave the appearance of going for another weapon, it's that simple.

Ah okay. Not sure the officer was thinking about the count when he saw the perp reaching for what he believed could very likely be a gun. But we can agree then that if the officer had a reasonable belief he was going for a weapon after fighting and refusing multiple lawful orders then it was time to discharge his weapon.
