http://www.washingtontimes.com/news...ent-women/#.UsBD1uSEM3o.twitter#ixzz2ouFU7clA There is a little something about equality, it is all about being treated equally and fairly. If someone, regardless of sex, is unable to pass X fitness requirements, why would they be considered for the Marines? Does this mean a thinly built male can get away with just three pullups? Or is this exception only existent for women (discrimination)? Equality is great. Everyone should embrace equal opportunity. However, this is not an example of equality.
Anyone person who can't do three pullups is nowhere hear fit, male or female. I'm a thinly built male who could do at least 20 until my mid 20's. Thinly built is actually better for pullups
What all sources are failing to mention is that only the date for meeting the requirement is being delayed. Meaning current female recruites will be given more time to train to meet the new requirment . This is much different that what is being implied, that female marine recruites will not be required to pass this physical test to become a marine.
There is nothing implied, the point is that the bar is being lowered for those who would otherwise have absolutely no business joining the Marines.
So who decides what the "bar" is? Seriously, in the modern Marines, what physical requirements are more important than perhaps other abilities? For instance, the ability to speak to, order about and question the wife of a male in a male dominated culture like there is in Iraq. If a male Marine does that, for the most part he simply ends up with silent or dead locals who will resist and sometimes die before cooperating with the humiliation of a strange man dominating your wife even if they are our allies, which is not the point of the invasion exercise. In any event, this thread's question of lack of fairness or "equality" is irrelevant, because they are not proposing to eliminate the requirement, just a delay in having to pass that particular test.
If a person is not able to pass the physical requirements for X, they can find another branch with lower standards.
Pull-ups require practice in combination with exercises that work the muscles of the back, biceps and forearms. There is no physical deficiency in females that precludes their inability to meet the minimum standard of 3 pull-ups (USMC). They just need to practice them, and develop the muscle areas which are utilized in doing a pull-up. I therefore look upon this as a failure by the Marine Corps to adequately work with their recruits in helping them achieve the minimum standards to graduate boot camp.
Taxcutter says: Indeed so - - until you strap on that 65 lb ruck. How does Maggie the Marine climb over a wall with a combat load if she cannot do pull-ups?
I think that if you ask the fathers, sons, brothers and male comrades on the front lines and in harm’s way if they want their own wives, mothers, daughters beside them while fighting the the answer is not so cut and dry. Not saying women can not achieve, I just want the ones I love home and safe. The standards is secondary to me. Yes, I am a relic.
The 3 pull-up requirement is the minimum standard to graduate boot camp. This doesn't mean they will then go on to a combat MOS (job). Not everyone in the services carries a rifle and climbs walls with 65 lbs. of gear on their backs....only about 1 in 10 are in direct combat units, taking the services as a whole.. Believe it or not folks, the military is very high tech...computer skills are more valued than shooting skills more often than not. There is no reason why a female who can do 0 pull-ups, can't serve in the military. The Marines have higher physical fitness standards, but given 12 weeks in which to work with a recruit, if they can't get them fit enough to do the minimum 3, they clearly are failing in some aspect of their training regimen or not selectively weeding out recruits early on in the process. They have 3 months to take a civilian off of the street and make them into a Marine. They have to have something to work with to make this possible. if a man or woman shows up at boot camp 40 lbs. over-weight and huffing and puffing going up a flight of stairs...3 months won't make much of a difference. You give me any female who is height/weight proportional, and in decent physical shape going into boot camp....in 12 weeks time they will doing 3 pull-ups and meeting the other minimum requirements to pass. So either the Marines are lowering their standards at that on-set or failing their recruits by not adequately preparing them to pass the physical fitness requirements.
Because reality not "PC"... To the Left , the US Military is a college intramural league. It doesn't occur to them that people get KILLED due to the failings of those around them in battle, and only want to make sure that their desired "demographinc template" is met.
Just so. men and women are not equal. Gay and straight are not equal. No level of PC equivocation can change it. Equality is NOT great. It isn't a fundamental right except in opportunity. It was rejected by the founders because it is the opposite of individual freedom.
It's what progressives believe is "equality". There are more men than women who can pass the physical... that's unfair. We need to lower the standards so more women are accepted. Same goes with black student test scores... just make the tests easier for them, or make it easier for them to get into college with lower scores. Think "equal results", not "equal opportunity".
This is what happens when you start allowing openly homosexual people and women into military. The entire system becomes pussified.
Having the strongest fighting force in the world is not important to them. It's more important that their loyal voting blocs get jobs in the military. It always comes back to wealth redistribution to their groups, who then support the Democrat Party. That is the motivation behind everything they push for.
More TIME??? If you can't do 3 push ups in basic, what kind of slobs are we trying to turn into killing machines here? YIKES!!!! I guess you could give a fat flabby nerd a joystick and a simulator and he could go wreck some havoc in his drone from the safety of his Doritos stained finger cockpit back at base=) I'm amazed 3 is the requirement? That's it? I'm thinking you can't even be considered a Marine unless you can do more like 30 pull-ups while the next guy in line is hanging on to your legs? Whats next, life preservers during swimming trials?
Pull ups are not requried to pass Air Force BMT, just a timed run, and 2 minutes each of sit-ups and push-ups. There is no built in deficiency of the female skeletal-muscular system to prevent them from doing the minimum of 3 pull-ups. It takes practice and exercising the muscles that will be utilized. A Marine recruit has 12 weeks to build up to the final physical fitness test. You mean to tell me the Marines can't train someone to do 3 pull-ups? They control every aspect of a recruits life for 12 weeks, very little time off.
More PC BS. It's a natural fact: women have 60% the strength of men. Look at the older PT charts---gee what a suprise---the requirements for push ups and sit ups are scaled-down for women by the same margin. If women are so equal---then what are the non-deployment rate for females in the military? Why is this number swept under the rug? Would you have like having a military aircraft that was only 60% as strong or reliable as the standard required? Would you like one that was not throughly tested? Maybe you'd be okay with a sub-standard aircraft that you didn't fly on yourself. Just like your thinking on women being up to the job as dismounted infantry and Marines---" It's cool as long as I'm not serving with them and trusting my life to them".
