Otherwise, governments wouldn't take them before exterminating their subjects that do not support them. This doesn't even address the untold number of people who are protected from crime by their guns. You can point to Canada all day long and I can point to Mexico just as easily. According to your FBI figures in 2010 287 people were killed in defensive legal homicides by private citizens. In that same year 15,572 under 15s were killed or injured by firearms. What kind of protection does this represent ? Even given that statistically your family is now 5 times more likely at risk of death by the very gun (s) you keep for their defence ?
I understand the gun control posts on this site. These people are trying to save lives. I don't understand the energy, the preponderance of statistics sited by the gun advocates, the passion and aggression displayed by these people, and the time that it takes to defend their untenable, indefensible stance...I don't understand it...they will say liberty, freedom are at stake...the 2nd amendment...on and on... But they have their guns...even though children are being murdered every day because of the freedoms these people insist upon...their liberty and freedom to own guns kill more children every day.... But, they are not attempting to save lives by the constant posting of their right to own guns....and yet they spend all that energy and time on this site.... They have their guns....why are they so passionate to defend that right....they have their guns....why do they not simply go and live their lives....the NRA will continue their control of the gun issues ...children will continue to die...isn't that what the proponents of more guns, more guns....want? Well, they have that.... ...go have a hamburger, oil their guns, pet the cat....children's lives are threatened......your guns are not.....you may, if you choose, relax a bit....

Comparing the US to third-world countries is intellectually dishonest, at best. Given that our leaders are democratically elected, they have the support of the majority of citizens. What motive would they have to literally wage war against these same people?
And the tens of thousands of entirely preventable deaths annually that accrue from that ? I suspect the victims of that and their families feel somewhat differently about such alleged 'freedoms'
