I wonder what the CURRENT imigration rate from Finland to the US is. . .versus what that rate was BEFORE they adopted a social democracy system?
I was merely disputing the claim that all the top education systems were socialized by showing 3 that are not.
So we can swallow in our legendary complacency about how great we are on everything, thanks to our "exceptionalism?" Hasn't work very well so far!
I said usually, not always. The majority of countries that score better than us have more socialized education systems than us.
I look forward to the day when liberals immigrate en masse to Finland for the socialism. That will be a red letter day in our history.
We know that American students score outside the top 10 in international tests of math and science. I wonder how American public school teachers would score against the Fin and South Korean public teachers? To my knowledge that has never happened but I'm betting our teachers would come in last.
By "our" standards I mean't America. And I think it would be good for "our" country to be rid of so many people who depend on government handouts for their daily bread.
That too if the private corporations are being given taxpayer money without earning it like so many on social welfare are.
Interesting....... but I'm sure you are well aware of what "strict and near total government regulation of public education" has accomplished for our country.
Yep, probably. And even I'll admit that it's not about spending. We spend more per capita on education than just about any other country. However, making something more socialized doesn't necessarily require more total spending. It just needs more efficient spending. The reason our precollegiate education suffers is a combination of factors: disparity in state standards, wealth disparity in school districts, and a culture that lacks a true respect for teachers or education in general.
I don't blame the government or Obama for the way schools are....I blame the way teachers are trained, the system they face, the parents, and the students. And the system I speak of is made dysfunctional by parents, students, and school boards...not the "government"...just my opinion At any rate....I don't view the US educational system as being strictly regulated. In CA, we have site based instruction, which is widly unregulated.
Many parents buy homes in particular neighborhoods particularly for the better schools there. And they usually pay higher school taxes to support those schools. I think it is only human nature to want your own child to have the best education you can give them.
Sure, but public schools should be more equal in quality. A proper system would accomplish this. Granted, I realize part of the problem is crappy parenting among poorer areas.
Bad parents are a problem. And even in affluent districts some kids still do not bother to try. But a bigger problem in poor neighborhoods is crappy teachers. These kids may be poor but they aren't stupid. They can tell pretty fast which teachers are just going through the motions of teaching, which ones are too dumb to pour (*)(*)(*)(*) out of a boot and which ones are just in it for the money. When the schools and teachers in poor schools do not take pride in what they are doing the kids are not going to put much value on it either.
Even worse and of course Under reported is Obama's favorite Union SEIU has now taken measures to capture funds from Medicaid that previously went to help Autistic and Cerebral Palsy kids. SEIU can now claim and receive a portion of Medicaid in the form of Union Dues from parents who accept Medicaid payments, from the State to help support a mentally-disabled adult child.
Seems like the truth to me. Kids have fallen behind in the US. Is that news to anyone? I think we should talk about it more and put more pressure on schools, and especially parents, that if they want their kids to succeed, they are going to have to push them harder.
If you call honest criticism and self-analysis 'bashing' then you have a real problem. America is far from perfect, exceptional or unique and the sooner some of these absurd 'patriots' realised it the better. If you cannot recognise faults in your own country then you have no right to criticise others for theirs.
It isn't an indictment of Obama per se...... it is the ideology and philosophy that he champions and yes IMO the government is culpable. I went to primary school before there was a Jimmy Carter created Department of Education. I have watched the decline of our education decline year after year. But it isn't just the billions wasted on Carters feckless bureaucracy, there is so much more. Take a look at California as a prime example. This state was once the national model with the highest rated education system in the country. We both know where it is now...... most would call it broken. I definitely agree with the other factors you cite and see them as yet more contributing factors to the decline. Also, our cultural decline as contributed to the loss of respect by students and parents of teachers and the public education system. I don't pretend to have a solution but I'm not encouraged with the proposals for reform that I have seen. The examples of amazing students I cited earlier speaking multiple languages, advanced mathematics and sciences are not attending public schools.
Bing, bang and boom. Best thing I've read all week. Patriotism is recognizing the problems your country has and working to fix them. Not plugging your ears and just repeating "We're number 1, we're number 1"
