Russian Fighter Jet Buzzed U.S. Ship: Officials

A Russian attack warplane engaged in "provocative action" when it repeatedly buzzed a U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer in the western Black Sea on Saturday, U.S. military officials tell NBC News.

The fighter jet was not armed. The U.S. Navy guided missile destroyer was well armed. What the U.S. destroyer was doing in western Black Sea? I am watching the news from different channels. It sounds like it is all about Putin. What Putin is going to do next? How to stop him? What kind of harm to Russian economy our sanctions can cause? Will he become intimidated? Nobody want to see that Putin is on a historic mission, do we like him or not. Where are no investigative analyses by CBS 60 minutes? Who traveled and talked with people from different parts of Ukraine and Russia? Actually, Ukraine is similar to Canada. Only historic circumstances are different. Canada is a bilingual country. If Quebec would demand western provinces to speak only French, what those English speakers would do? I remember time, when Quebec was mulling independence: "We are absolutely different people!" their leader screamed loudly. What if Quebec would separate from Canada? Ten, Eastern provinces of Cando would join USA. Parallel with Ukraine, Carpathian Ukrainians have never been a part of Russia. Eastern Ukrainians are actually the same as Russians culturally and historically. Naturally, when EU push eastward, the result was disastrous for this fragile country. Putin got an excellent opportunity to reunite eastern provinces of Ukraine with Russia. This is not about if Putin is bad or good. He is on his historic mission and he is doing very well. He got at the right place and at the right time to become a great leader.

    Taxcutter says:
Yup. He's on a mission. Restore Imperial Russia's 1914 borders. Maybe nip off Prussia and Silesia.

If he can get his torpid country moving, it's a slam dunk.

Is Prussia and Silesia part of the old Kievan Russian Empire? If they are and there is a majority or a large minority of Russians I would start worrying. If on the other hand, it has never been part of historic Russia, then forget it. I don't think Russia wants them.

Putin is on his last legs and this is VERY bad news. This is beyond showmanship, these are the actions of a desperate man, and everyone knows that's when everything goes wrong.

According to the Montreux treaty, the only warships allowed on the Black Sea for an indefinite period of time are the ones belonging to the nations bordering on it. In other words, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia and Turkey are allowed. All other warships must leave after a certain amount of days. Russia has complained to Turkey which controls the Dardinelles, that the U.S. ships have been exceeding the amount of days allowed by the Treaty. Turkey of course lied, and said they did not. Anyway there are problems. :oldman:

Thats not exactly true. A US warship did overstay and did begin to withdraw. The Americans made no secret of the fact the ship was there and that it had violated the treaty

Not at all. Again, you are talking how bad Putin is. This is what corporate media is working on - to make people thinking this way. Among acting politicians in USA and EU nobody has enough courage to go ahead and cooperate with Russia, solving problems. Only retired men, who do not run for an office, can speak up their minds and they have the wisdom and experience. Who listened to Henry Kissinger?

You are in the mainstream of lies spread by corporate media. Putin is doing pretty well, so far. Senior stuff members of our administration admit this, again, when they retires. Think of it. A great political leader is one, who understands, when and how historical circumstance are playing in his hands. Putin proved he is one.

You may not like Putin or even hate him, but Putin is one who has the job to do and he is backed by people at home. The rest does not count.

    Taxcutter says:
No. Prussia and Silesia were not part of the old Romanov Russian Empire. But if Poland collapses under the weight of T-90s, these provinces would be a net gain and rank Putin among the greatest of Russian leaders. Nabbing them puts him at the defensible Oder River line without necessarily going to war with Germany.

Because of their dependence on Russian natural gas, Germany will not go to war unless Putin crosses the Oder.

Gas, oil or other resources. The major resource are people who live on the land. Watch the latest news. About 20 cities and towns in eastern Ukraine are taken "by Putin". How he managed to accomplish this? Just keeping 40,000 troops near the border? Agents? People of Ukraine do not want Maidan government in Kiev. The Maidan government is weak, has no army and no influence. Radicals want them to act quickly. Genocide is not an option. What is next? You are talking gas and oil, but people living on the land in Ukraine matter the most. This be a shame, if he would stay indifferent observer. Putin is a very reserved, calculated and cautious. He called Obama, asking him to help to avoid violence in Ukraine, but our Obama is backing up those Maidan nationalists. The crisis is deepening.

There is plenty of historical precedent for Russians starving Ukrainians.

Compare and contrast Lavrov's diplomatic public overtures with Obama's. The former has publicly condemned the lawlessness of the Russian-speakers' in regards to their taking-over of government buildings in many of the cities of eastern Ukraine and has repeatedly called for mediation with a view to ending the crisis. The latter, on the other hand, has been relatively silent in condemning the coup in Kiev and has upped the anti with his use of heavy-handed rhetoric. In this regard, it has been the Kremlin as opposed to Washington that has taken the lead on the world stage.

Lavrov has displayed statesman-like qualities and leadership while his American and European counterparts prefer to rattle their sabres and throw baby-tantrums. Both Obama and Kerry come across as yesterday's men - washed-out and ineffectual has-beens that have long passed their sell-by dates.

A recent poll undertaken in the Independent newspaper illustrating Putin's relative popularity among the general public would appear to vindicate Putin's approach to the crisis. I am personally of the opinion that the public are sick and tired of the propaganda they are being fed. But the corporate media who spoon-feed them this propaganda still haven't woken up to the Iraq-effect.

The public have been duped once too often and no longer believe the rubbish produced by the likes of The Washington Post who, for example, recently ran an unsubstantiated story linking the massive protests in former Russian territories of Ukraine to “rent-a-mobs” instigated by the Russian government.

Even the Washington’s stooges in Kiev acknowledged the need for some autonomy for the Russian-speaking regions and for a law permitting referendums. However, Kerry and Obama's response to this reasonable request has been deafening in its diplomatic silence. The "diplomacy" of the American's amounted to Kerry's demand that “Russia must remove its people from the South-East.”

U.S claims that the protests in the east of Ukraine are insincere and mere orchestrations by “Putin who wants to restore the Soviet empire” are complete hogwash that are nevertheless uncritically replicated by a compliant echo-chamber of a mass media machine. The truth is, Washington continues ignoring the Russian government and blaming the unrest on Russia’s not Washington’s, interference. http://rt.com/news/lavrov-kerry-ukraine-talks-200/ See also: http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article38196.htm

The Russian government knows that Washington does not believe what Washington is saying and that Washington is systematically provoking a continuation and worsening of the problem. The American's cannot apparently grasp that the Russian government is no more able to accept the application of violence against Russian populations in Ukraine than it could accept violence against Russians in South Ossetia.

If Washington doesn’t come to its senses, the Russian government will have to send in troops as it had to do in Georgia. http://rt.com/news/ukraine-russia-operation-criminal-288/

Given that the U.S is sending out all the wrong signals, one can only reasonably assume that Washington’s goal is war. How else to explain why it is that Washington is massing NATO forces on Russia’s borders and sending missile ships into the Black Sea? Washington is putting the entire world at risk. I'm hopeful though, that diplomacy will win in the end but only because Russia will have led the way.

When NATO forces attacked Serbia in 1999, killing many civilians, in order to establish the current disastrous mafia statelet of Kosovo, Sergei Lavrov spoke very wisely at the Security Council. He said:

"Attempts to justify strikes as preventing humanitarian catastrophe were not recognized by international law, he said. The use of unilateral force would lead to a situation with devastating humanitarian consequences. No considerations of any kind could serve to justify aggression. Violations of law could only be combated on the solid basis of the law......

.....Attempts to apply other standards to international law and disregard other laws created a dangerous precedent.....The virus of a unilateral approach could spread… the Council alone should decide the means to maintain or restore international security. NATO’s attempt to enter the twenty-first century in the uniform of an international gendarme set a dangerous precedent."

    http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/1999/19990324.sc6657.html

He was of course absolutely right. Could anyone seriously imagine Obama or Kerry making such a statesman-like and truthful comment?

Of course not. That's because they prefer to adhere to the outmoded ideology that pertains to liberal interventionism and the right to protect which are extremely foolish and dangerous doctrines. When propagated by useful idiots, even at their most high-minded they were never more that a repetition of the old imperialist “civilizing mission” of military attack to eradicate barbarous practices. In fact they were brutally utilized as an excuse for resource grab and personal enrichment.

Those were communists. They starved all, including Russians. Now, Germany and USA will feed some Ukrainians, the rest will have enough food, because they will be with Russia.

On the contrary, I have just this second heard a UK journalist on Channel 4 News interview a Ukrainian soldier based in Izyum who said she intends to defect to the Russian military. She was asked by the journalist why the population of the city were not prepared to welcome the Ukrainian's given that the conversation between them was being undertaken in Ukraine and that they were Ukrainian's. She responded by saying that the reason was because neither the military or the population of the city recognized what they regard as an illegitimate government. This sentiment is reflected throughout the towns and cities of eastern Ukraine.

Putin has International support, plus support in Ukraine as well as in Russia. He did not fire a shot, yet. Only USA and EU are not approving Putin, but this will change. Actually, he is a reluctant hero, very patient and open to dialogue with USA and EU.

    Fully agree with this statement.

Putin just protects the interests of his people. He is a Russian, most of his voters are Russians, and there are a lot of Russians who live under the Ukrainian occupation who want to reunite with Russia.

So Putin is just "riding the wave", he is doing the most natural thing in the world, speak he is doing his duty.

That is why he becomes the more popular, the more the "World Government" tries to denigrate him.

Germans and any other people in Europe would be happy to have an own representative that cares about their interests, they would like to have a German, French, English, Spanish, Italian etc. Putin.

That is why intelligent and decent people in the West like Putin.

You're probably right, Taxcutter. The Germans lost two world wars in forty years, and it taught them that it's a lot more fun getting rich and making somebody else play the "war games". The Germans I know are clever, industrious people who are very interested in making a hell of a lot of money, retiring as soon after age 50 as they can, and taking month-long vacations running around partying and naked on the beaches of places like Spain, Greece, and Tenerife. I don't know of one single German who is chewing at the straps to go have a big fight with the Russians about anything. All of them have studied the mistakes in the way their forefathers waged war -- especially World War II, and in particular -- at Stalingrad.... Obama can blow smoke up Angela Merkel's skirt until he's out of breath. The Germans aren't going to fight the Russians until or unless their month-long vacations are threatened.... :roflol:

When Russia complained the warship did leave, but from what I gathered, it was not the first time it happened.

Putin never mentioned the Romonov Empire, what he did refer to was the old Kievan Russian Empire of the Middle Ages, which was a loose federation of Slavic States. I think he's trying to oppose the new 'Marxist' world order which is being formed by neo con ideologues such as George Soros. This might be why the world corporate media is so intent on demonizing Putin.

What shocks me are the blatant lies coming from Obama and Kerry, but it is not the lies perse which I find shocking, but that they don't care if they are caught in those lies. In other words they know how powerful the people supporting them are, so they feel they can do or say whatever they want.

    Anyway this is my opinion.

Excellent. I think of Russians, they had a lot of bitter taste of war, but they won last time and had their Stalin and then Communist party rule. Now, they have capitalism "at its worst", have rich and superrich, but their middle class is thin. I hope they will catch up with Germans at better life style, eventually. I am sure they do not want to fight another war, including their president Putin. Even Ukrainian crisis is consequence of Communist rule and cold war period. I hope this crisis will be resolved between people of Ukraine and Russia, if EU and USA would not intervene.
