Should mocking somebodies death be considered as Hate Speech?

Yes, it is. We shouldn't do it, but it shouldn't be censored either .... just disapproved. It's better that all communities regulate themselves than be regulated from on high.

 

Granted, across the internet the WOKE sjw political Left has been mocking Black republican and former presidential candidate Herman Cain for dying of Covid-19; but I still don't think that all those RACIST leftists should be charged with hate speech inside forum systems because the workload for mods would be off the scale as they have to judge each and every example offerred up by an offended poster as 'proof'. Most of these moderators, after all, are volunteers.

As always the general rule is - treat people (in life or death) as you would wish to be treated yourself. But it's a complex issue. Based on the available evidence 'death' as a topic as been the butt of humor almost certainly since as a species we became aware of our own mortality. Anyone want to count the number of St Peter or 'Pearly Gate' jokes there are out there? Not to mention all the jokes based on a prominent contemporary figures popping their clogs.

So I would suggest the real issue is intent. Is the intention of the person telling the 'joke' to demean the race, region,gender etc of the person involved? And perhaps how soon after the death of the person concerned is the joke told.

Would I mind if a friend or colleague told a joke at my expense after I was dead (assuming I could know about it)? Why are they telling it i.e. what is their intent. And if the intent is not malicious as far as I'm concerned if, after I die someone tells lots of jokes at my expense and it cheers up the people I care about, gives them a them smile, even for an instant, more power to em.
