How does it compare to 4G?

    I already posted this but.....

Well the signal would be traveling at nearly 186,282 miles per second so even if the satellites were in geosynchronous orbit which is a distance of 22,236 miles above sea level it would only take a total of 0.11967 of a second to travel from the satellite to the surface of the Earth.

So we are talking about a 0.11967 signal travel time to and from the satellite.

Now the time delay of light in a distance fiber can easily be approximated. Since light travels down light in approximately a straight line we can use the formula (D = T * V) where D is the distance the fiber travels, T is the time it takes to travel, and V is the velocity of light. The speed of light inside fiber is close to 2*10^8 m/s. So for example the time delay of light traveling down 2 kilometers (2,000 meters) of fiber will be close to 10 (10*10^-6 seconds).

When this formula is used to calculate signal delay time to and from an internet HUB the delay time will be approx. 0.27845 of a second which is SLOWER than the Satellite delay time.

Amy the delay time is only 0.11967 with an approx. added 0.00946 processing time which is about 5 times faster than what is known as 4G.

Yeah, like this deal with internet service. So little competition, which is contrived. My service is outrageous and no longer unlimited for a base price. Evil as rigged capitalism can be. (*)(*)(*)(*)ing greedy ass bastards.

They can ban or restrict providers.
Satellite makes Google Maps navigation work. Sprint is my provider. Without the provider, I can't access Google Maps. Sprint could partner up with Scout-another navigation system, and make Scout the only available navigation option on all Sprint devices.
    Accessibility can easily be controlled.

All right, then why is satellite so high-latency? Also, how will uploading work with this new tech? I can't imagine internet users being able to send signals to the satellites. Dishes only receive.

Amy the United States placed into orbit what is known as the GPS Satellite Constellation. The baseline satellite constellation consists of 24 satellites positioned in six earth-centered orbital planes with four operation satellites and a spare satellite slot in each orbital plane. The system can support a constellation of up to thirty satellites in orbit.

These satellites must have their internal time clocks reset constantly and this is due to Time Dilation.

In the theory of relativity, Einstein explains that time moves slower for a clock on a satellite rotating around the Earth. This effect arises neither from technical aspects of the clocks, nor from the propagation time of the signals, but rather from the nature of space-time. If the mass of the Earth were to increase, time would run even slower for clocks on the satellite. Relativity predicts that the onboard atomic clocks of the satellites should fall behind clocks on the Earth’s surface by about 7 microseconds per day as a result of the slower ticking rate, which is caused by the time dilation effect of their relative motion around the Earth.

If the Atomic Clocks within the GPS satellites were not constantly reset then GPS would not work at all.

As well each GPS satellite has the ability to change it's orbital distance as well which is sometimes used to correct time dilation issues.

    Get it?

Listen currently available civilian satellite based systems absolutely SUCK!!!

They are no where near on par with already existing for some time by the way U.S Military Satellite tech as the military satellite broadcast and land based signal capture tech is DECADES in advance of anything currently commercially available.

When my Team is out in the field in the middle of nowhere we rely on satellite based systems and they are not only lightning fast they are also durable and highly dependable and can capture and broadcast signal from anywhere!!

For cell phones GPS (satellite) locates you precisely. If you check in on Facebook GPS pulls up your location.
I can locate any of my kids instantly using GPS so long as their phone is on.
But navigation, in my opinion, is the most beneficial aspect of cell phones having GPS. I say a location and my phone pulls up a map with me as a little dot moving along a blue line. My phone tells me where to turn, on what road, which lane to get in.... there is no delay. Gps shows my exact location as I move.

    What is this a quiz????

    LOL!!!

Anyone who has an older laptop or computer wants their internet speed as fast as possible to make up for their older computers processing delay time but if a person has a new computer even the currently slowest available cable internet access as a person can pay more for higher speeds is more than fast enough.

I will not even bother discussing dial up as that is archaic but if a person is say Day Trading like I sometimes do you absolutely want the highest internet access speed possible as well you want a newer computer that is lightning fast.

Most people with older computers have a hard time streaming videos as they tend to stop running due to the buffering.

Well there is a delay but it is small but when we are talking about being able to use GPS guided munitions and drop a 1000 lbs GPS Guided Bomb out of a USAF B-2 or other aircraft flying at 600 mph or faster traveling at 40 to 50,000 feet YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE SOMETHING AS INACCURATE AS A CELL PHONES GPS!!

    lol!!

In Military applications GPS Guided Weapons are being directly directed by the GPS SATELLITE TRANSMISSION

This is necessary because we need as close to perfect accuracy as possible when dropping munitions and a cell phones GPS transmission is simply TOO SLOW!!!

It could mean the difference of hitting the target or missing it!!

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_Internet_access#Signal_latency

    Challenges and limitations
    Signal latency

Latency (or 'ping' as it is commonly referred to) is the delay between requesting data and the receipt of a response, or in the case of one-way communication, between the actual moment of a signal's broadcast and the time it is received at its destination. The amount of latency depends on the distance travelled and the speed of light. Light including wireless radiation would take about 0.12 seconds to reach a geostationary satellite (at 36,000 km above the equator), so nearly 1/4 second for a round trip. Latency is the main difference between a standard terrestrial based network and a geostationary satellite network. The round trip latency of a geostationary satellite communication's network can be almost 20 times that of a terrestrial based network.

Your "military" crap isn't going to overcome that, Q. You've said it yourself already, too, that the signal time over that distance is 0.11967 seconds one-way, or about 0.12 seconds, which doubled adds up to nearly a quarter of a second in signal transmission time. Terrestrial signals have a far shorter distance to cover and are far lower-latency. This Space X crap can't change the laws of physics.

Well Google Maps is usually no more than a foot or two off if you're in a good coverage area.
I have been lost in Alabama with no signal. I had to stop at a gas station and ask for directions!
I have an absolutely horrible sense of direction and I don't know how I would have gotten around prior to GPS.
I don't see how a bomb one foot to the right or left would matter much. Haha.
    Aren't drones utilized more today?

OK first off drones like the Predator, the MQ-9 Reaper or perhaps an X47-B Stealth Robotic Attack Drone....and we have others.....well these are used usually for strikes upon Terrorist elements as they are capable of flying for very long periods of time over a target or suspected target and even look for targets of opportunity.

They are capable of carrying ordinance such as Hellfire Missiles as well as small GBU's or bombs.

In the near future the United States will have thousands of Self Autonomous Robotic Stealth Attack Drones available for use in war times as an aircraft that does not need to have all the added weight necessary for pilot life support can fly faster, longer and perform aerial maneuvers that would KILL a pilot as even now aircraft like the F-22 and F-18 Hornet and others are capable of maneuvering faster than a human body is capable of surviving as the G-Force that these aircraft can survive in very quick aerial maneuvers is too high for a human body to survive as an F-22 without built in computerized aerial maneuvering GOVERNORS which PREVENT the aircraft from turning or banking too quickly...well without the governors a pilot would be killed as the G-Force upon a human body in a too fast aerial maneuver will cause the internal organs inside a person to be RIPPED FROM THE SKELETON!!

Anyways the point is drones will one day rule the skies but for now men pilot the vast majority of missions.

And as far as the GPS the difference in speed as far as what your cell phone is capable of getting signal compared to a Satellite......well the Cell phone is just too slow as the difference of a MILLISECOND for a GPS Guided Munition dropped from 40 to 50 thousand feet means the difference between hitting the target or missing it entirely!!

OK I have told you this before.....because of what I do....and yes I am sort of retired as I no longer do field work but I am still a consultant for them....I DO NOT give out any information about anything to do with my phones....address, last name.....no names of relatives....etc.

Now you might think it to be silly that I could not tell you whether I have a Galaxy or an I-Phone and yes I currently own more than 2 working cell phones.....but I assure you it is NOT SILLY!!

Because of what I do and did even something as innocuous as allowing others to know what type of cell phone I use can not only be cause for alarm it can also endanger men I have sworn to lead and protect.

Now I am NOT a computer guy as I have a member of my Tea who is and computer geeks whisper this mans name in fear like a Harry Potter fan whispers the name VOLDEMORT!!

In reality this man is way more dangerous to some than even a real existing Voldemort.

    Even the Company fears him.

You know I have TRIED to explain to Amy that a man of my age....just over 50....really is NOT enamored with CELL PHONES!! lol!!!

First of all I think it to be a complete waste of a persons life to be playing around with a hand held IDIOT BOX all day long while real life passes them by!! LOL!!

Hey don't get me wrong a good cell phone is very helpful as you can make and accept calls use the GPS as well as look up things on the internet as well as a host of other things but when I see a BUNCH OF MORONS standing at the edge of a street trying to cross to the other side while cars are whizzing by at 60 miles per hour and these IDIOTS are so engrossed with their damn phones they don't tend to look at anything else and it is a well known fact that EVOLUTION VIA NATURAL SELECTION is helping to WEED THESE IDIOTS OUT OF THE GENE POOL as every day we read about some MORON who was so engrossed at playing with their phone that they died walking into traffic or walking off a CLIFF playing that Pokemon Game...etc!! LOL!!!

Point is......PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE!!

    Eyeroll.
Most folks in the US with important jobs have a work phone and a private phone.
You can't talk about the subject because you're ill-equipped to. And you know I will bring you to the church of the painful truth.
