Big deal... (*)(*)(*)(*) happened to me too. I was 'overpaid' about $30 a pay period for my deployments in Afghanistan. Received a bill two years after my active service ended stating I owed $3,100 PLUS INTEREST for the past few years.

No chance to argue, before I knew it, BOOM! Turned over to collections and marked on my credit report. They garnished my wages for months.

And the whole time I'm thinking... 'I should renounce my citizenship, cross the border to Mexico, and then cross back. Then maybe I can take advantage of some of those awesome government programs'.

Is that all he had to do? Well, (*)(*)(*)(*), you should do it too then.

All you have to do is sign your name. Go ahead... FREE money.

I agree. The state should be paying the money back.
But it's not liberals or the left going after the money. It's the Pentagon. Many in this forum are uninformed. Probably on purpose.

I don't get how the partisans can't see the gov't plays the ordinary folks like the good cop/bad cops do in the movies.
Periodically, the parties switch up the roles.
But both parties are in it for the elites, the WSers, the bankers.

The Army gave me a 10K bonus for my recent reclass. I haven't touched it because this happens ALL THE TIME since 2008. I know it'll be collected back. Just a matter of time.

This is the most egregious asinine thing I have heard of lately. It was a contract between the person that re-enlisted and the government. It should be honored.

This didn't come from the state of California. It came from DOD - the Pentagon. Defense Finance and Accounting Service is the one taking the money back according to some rules discovered by unnamed and faceless bureaucrats.

Yes, they served in the California National Guard but when it was FEDERALIZED.

I am certain that members of Congress, pressured by an outraged public, will come up with legislation to put an end to this and pay back what has been taken away.

Lawmaker Rips DoD Takeback of Troop Bonuses as 'Boneheaded'
Oct 24, 2016 | Days after a news organization reported the Defense Department is forcing National Guardsmen from California to pay back bonuses received in error, lawmakers and advocates are calling on officials to forgive their debt.

It is not free when you sign a contract for it and promise work in return for it. You are an idiot lol. Incapable of basic logic.

Obama could use his "Pen and Phone" and make this go away in 2 minutes. I hope he does.

If he doesn't care about these vets enough to act, Trump should add it to his first day pledge.

A country that has Billions to toss around the (*)(*)(*)(*)ing globe, fighting phantom causes like Global Warming...but wants to squeeze vets for a buck? Shameful.

Just saw the House Majority Leader (can't remember his name) on Fox&Friends. Said that he and "several colleagues" sent a letter to DOD requesting they stop taking back the money until Congress can act on it when they return to work Nov 17th. Let's see what happens.

I support a "war tax" on those who make over $170,000 of around 25% whenever US soldiers or US "contractors" are engaged in a military action. There should be a credit if you send one or more of your children to fight on the front lines. No write-offs or other loopholes. The $170,000 isn't arbitrary, it's slightly under what most Congress members make. Also stipulate that this tax will increase with any Congressional pay so that they can't set their pay just low enough to avoid the tax. I'm guessing that we wouldn't see another war for quite some time.

With the tax, the closure of a few hundred bases, cancellation a few of the "money pit" projects, and an audit of the Pentagon, that should be enough to forgive these payouts, fix the VA, and provide enough money to pay SS back for the war funding that has been siphoned off of it.

Fraud in the inducement reduces their military service to involuntary servitude - a heinous violation of basic human rights and the COTUS.

Congress Knew for 2 Years About Efforts to Take Back Veteran Bonuses

I saw one of the Friends on Fox&Friends bring this up to House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy who almost blew up denying it. Well, there is this:

Mueller said the California Guard had previously "recommended that Congress speed up this Army process" and had sent draft legislation to do so to each California congressional office in 2014. In the interview, he said Congress had not acted at the time because of the cost.

But Congress did nothing because of the cost.

    And this extends beyond California!!!

Apparently 75% of the Veterans from whom the DOD are trying to Rake Back their
signing bonuses have NOT answered their Governments demand, or are refusing
to Co-operate. - I wonder how many of that 75 % are HOMELESS and how many
................... have BLOWN THEIR BRAINS OUT since they were discharged ?:steamed:

Quick, someone sing the Star Spangled Banner and tell the guys "thanks for your service". That'll make them feel better about being chumps.

And they didn't ask for it. It was a bonus.....and now forced to pay it back.

What's their Commander-in-Chief gonna do about this injustice? With a swipe of his pen, he could wipe away this despicable (*)(*)(*)(*) thrown at the vets and tell the government to eat their own mistake....but so far, not a word out of him - not surprising.

I don't sell my sons for a tax credit. That's pretty stupid. My sons are welcome to serve if they want. Why should I get paid for my son's sacrifice. Give it to him directly. And I'm all for closing down some foreign bases until the countries benefitting from the base pay for our protection. I don't sacrifice my son's for the benefit of those too lazy and cheap to protect themselves.

Who makes more fun of the troops than the politicians who use them like rags and then throw them away when they get dirty? It has been that way since the Revoutionary War. The troops are loved when they are bleeding and dying for the cause but as soon as the fighting is over they get kicked in the face by the people that caused their suffering. They never learn.

Remember how the troops were scammed after WWI? Hoover sicced MacArthur on the veterans who dared asked for their promised bonuses for fighting in the European trenches.
