There are very few movies today other than dopey action movies that don't have a left wing message. There virtually zero movies that have a right wing message.

 

I get distracted whilst watching movies so I like to hear the dialogue if I decide to move around. If I have to read a movie I would prefer to pick up a book.

So it's not on my list of must sees.

 

Hollywood hates America, so I am not surprised that a foreign film won best picture.

We are talking about people who gave fugitive child rapist Roman Polanski a standing ovation.

 

I meant argo in that context.

I realize there were no jack and rose.

 

Only the political right would fall for the rantings of a demagogue like DJT.

 

Even Argo took way to many liberty with the truth of the event.

 

Define "foreign film". Parasite is notable for being the first non-English language film to win best picture. It was also funded and made outside the USA, with non-American crew and actors but it won't be a first on any of those factors. For all the symbology of "Hollywood", the mainstream film industry is very much an international one these days plus an increasing number of successful films are being produced outside that mainstream infrastructure entirely (maybe outside of distribution). I don't know how you'd draw a line to define "foreign film" in that context. Unless you do it on the knee-jerk racist basis that has clearly triggered Trump of course, and I'd like to hope nobody here would support that.

 

Yah, I covered that briefly back in post #33... But it's still a watchable movie on repeat.... Not all of them are.

On topic, we did rent Parasite last night.... Good, but not awesome, which is how I personally describe most of the Best Picture winners since @ 2000....

Really good plot twist midway through the movie.... I cannot imagine anybody watching this doesn't think this guy is the Korean Tarantino watching the 2nd half of the film.

Highly doubt there is a need to re-watch this one ever again...

Zero chance Trump would be able to sit for 2+ hours and understand what's going on with subtitles... there IS reading required....

 

The academy wouldn't know a good film if it bit them on the posterior. Thus making the Oscars meaningless.

 

I thought it was about a guy that tried to tell his friends that they would lose the war, fell in love with a spoiled brat, tried to save his friends the best he could, but could sit around in jail and laugh with "Damn Yankees" after the loss, flirting with a black woman repeatedly, and said a cuss word to the spoiled brat who cared more for Tara than pretty much anything, but the spoiled brat eventually learned to get her hands dirty and eat turnips...

Gone with the Wind is an epic, another favorite epic might be Spartacus (a movie about slavery too, or maybe a love story), or The Robe (slavery, or a love story), or...

 

They were aiming for accuracy.

 

Had all that stuff you mentioned... But GWTW is primarily a movie about the Civil War.

I do have to note that while Spartacus and The Robe are about slavery, it's not the slavery of blacks...

There are a lot of epics Trump could have gone to... It's just medically fascinating to wonder where his brain goes and how much of that is a dog whistle to his base...

Reminds me of the article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about Jimmy Carter not appointing as many blacks as Lester Maddox. Why? Because that base you think you see were probably all DEMOCRATS.

As for his brain, he was born in New York; just watch any old movie from there, they are all rude *******s, and Californicans all surfer dudes... Stereotypes, what about watermelon, is it okay if I buy watermelon from the blacks during BCR?

 

Actually, for his generation, this is pretty much the go to movie to name drop. It's also primarily a movie about characters set against a civil war backdrop. That is how almost all fiction works. Read into it what you want, but liking a movie that has slaves...even black ones, without ever advocating for it isn't a sure sign someone is a racist. The only thing I can take from it is that he has better taste in storytelling than most.

 

LOL.. you think somebody with his attention span has actually sat and watched GWTW from start to finish?? Even as a younger man?? I'd take that bet....

I'd also bet he'd fail a simple set of questions about that movie that most anybody who has seen it would pass....

I watched this only because it was an award winner, it was not a good movie. The "message" was ridiculous unless they intended the message to be that poor people are criminals.

That wasn't the message of Parasite.... These 4 people were criminals, not that "poor people are criminals"...

The message was more that the rich family wasn't smart enough to see what was going on around them...

Ford v Ferrari was the better movie of 2019 (of the 4.5 Oscar nominees I've seen - .5 because I couldn't make it through The Irishman)...

 

Parasite wasn’t bad but Joker and eve Knives Out were better films. If a foreign film can win best picture there shouldn’t be a separate category. It’s basic AA. 2 chances to win best picture. Lame and lame. Hollywood selling out for feels. The awards have taken a dump for a while anyway.
