That may be true but you have to admit that adding sprinkler systems to tall buildings is very expensive and raises the cost of housing for residential buildings.
Did We the People Form a More Perfect Union for the General Welfare of Property Developers to make the Largest Profit Margin?
Bottom line here is Trump tower was built to code. If the people if NYC want the code changed they should push for that.
Hmmmmm, you seem to know an awful lot about Russian name structure. Maybe I should call Mueller, tell him I've caught myself a Russian spy. Then I can call CNN, tell them to get collusion bombshell #82,304 ready.
Just build it cheap, using the work of mexican illegals that would be underpaid. Of course, the dowside to it is that it will likely require a huge influx of mexican illegals to carry it out.
I believe that NYC still has rent ( cost) controls. Not sure the exact details but there are apartments that are grandfathered into rent controls. I am sure we must have a New Yorker or two here who may know the rules.
I seriously doubt that there are any apartments in the Trump Tower that are "rent controlled" by NYC.
So the underlying problem was insufficient government regulation? Or do you think less regulation would have been better?
The Life and Safety Code has been written as a result of catastrophe, not in anticipation of it. The Trump Tower, like every property of it's type built at the time, did not require fire sprinklers. Now, if you want to get partisan about it, why did one of the most liberal cities in North America allow itself to be one of the last big cities to adopt such standards? How many others have died in buildings without fire sprinklers in NYC, or does it only matter when the building is owned by Trump?
I was responding who a poster who seems to be supportive of deregulation and small government, pointing out that the position he was taking was essentially in favor of more regulation. I wasn't taking a partisan position. Just pointing out that mr SteveN, who tries to pass himself off as a conservative, was taking a pro-regulation position.
Lefties don't need things like fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and guns to protect themselves until the proper authorities arrive. Help will be there any hour now to save them.
Structurally it'll still have to be checked by engineers because depending on how long the fire burned and the intensity of it, the steel beams might have been heated up quite a bit and even though they cooled down, they could have become brittle and structurally fail at some point. The city will want to avoid having a major building of that size suffer a structural failure, it would be catastrophic if there was a partial or complete collapse.
Trump once fought legislation requiring sprinklers in NYC buildings April 8, 2018 "President Trump has a complicated history with the life-saving sprinklers the Trump Tower residential quarters lacked during a deadly fire Saturday. Nearly two decades ago, Trump, then one of the Big Apple’s most prominent real estate moguls, lobbied against Mayor Rudy Giuliani-era legislation that considered whether sprinklers should be installed in all residential buildings after two fatal fires in Brooklyn and Manhattan. The 1998 fires, which sparked sweeping building code changes, killed three firefighters at the NYCHA-run housing for seniors and four more died of smoke inhalation at an Upper West Side high-rise where child actor Macaulay Culkin's family lived. The Brooklyn home had sprinklers but they were turned off at the time of the blaze. The 51-story Manhattan building also had sprinklers, but only on the first 10 floors for commercial tenants. Early talks for the proposed bill suggested that all residential buildings be required to install sprinklers, which irked developers, including Trump. The future president backed off on panning the proposal after it was tweaked to grandfather existing buildings — such as Trump Tower — or structures for which building permits had already been filed, such as the Trump World Tower. Construction on the 72-floor building opposite the United Nations began in 1999. The fire that erupted inside Trump Tower on Saturday killed art dealer Todd Brassner at his 50th floor pad, where the law never mandated sprinklers to be equipped."
There's no story. The building was built to code. There was no crime. There was no illicit behavior. This is not an issue. It's just made up crap to make a Trump look bad.
In order for the permit to be granted the original plans for the building would have had to included a fire suppression system. I know when my company does apartment complexes we need to do a ton of work to get those systems ready for inspection and if the inspection doesn't come then we are at a standstill at times. It is a huge focus.

Yeah if a fire starts they can just jump out the window. Who needs those expensive and time consuming sprinklers?
