Yes, there will be tanks at Trump's Fourth of July event — but there's a catch

This will be Trump politicizing the military and abusing the Fourth of July as another campaign event for himself. Just as we saw on his G20 trip, everything he does is ultimately meant to serve himself, not the United States. He is too cognitively crippled by his NPD to place anyone or anything, even the country itself, before himself.

There's a reason that no president before Trump has turned July 4 into, well, what Trump is turning it into. And that reason isn't that they didn't love America enough or understand what makes this country great.

Instead, they understood that there is a very fine line between patriotism and nationalism. (FWIW: Patriotism is, according to Merriam Webster, a "love for or devotion to one's country." Nationalism is a "sense of national consciousness exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups.")

Everyone draws that line differently. But I return to the fact that lots of past presidents -- Republicans and Democrats -- have had the chance to do something like Trump is planning on July 4 and taken a pass, choosing instead to keep the day entirely devoid of any sort of political statement. Was that unpatriotic? Or was it a recognition that putting tanks and other military equipment in and around Washington, DC sends the wrong sort of message to both our allies and our enemies?

The parading of military has long been the stuff of dictators and authoritarian regimes -- from Iran to North Korea to Russia. The leaders -- military and civilian -- in the United States have avoided that sort of thing because, well, the strongest guy in the gym doesn't need to go around telling everyone how strong he is. It's understood. Yes, we have massive military might. But we also believe in diplomacy, avoiding military conflicts at all costs and using force as only a last resort.

I was going with what I know which is for tracked vehicule in the canadian armed forces. One of my best buddy was a tank driver (Leopard C1 or 1A3 if you prefer the euro nomenclature). He's the one who told me about the different track they used.
During training, while driving a Lynx tracked recon vehicule he made a fast 180 degree turn in the parking lot with the wrong set of track once and got his ass handed to him for diging up the asphalt... He never made that same mistake again according to him.

 

Looks like these Republicans in Amarillo prefer not to wear the hood anymore.

We celebrate the humanistic principles our nation was founded upon. Everytime we fight against Trump's censoring of the press, or his mockery of human rights, or his attacks on the courts, we celebrate what America means. July 4th is meant to celebrate our independence from the British. It doesn't celebrate the Revolutionary War.

I was not a tanker at all, nor in the Army, but as I recall, tanks have special coverings for use on roads and use in parades so that they don't tear up roads. Normal treads on tanks are specifically designed to tear up roads, by design, aren't they?

Not sure if that is correct. I would also guarantee they make them as light as possible for these types of events.
