The chart might be too big if we used individuals rather than aggregates, that an doing any statistical work without aggregates is... well... doing it wrong.

Trying to argue that education doesn't result in higher salaries and a lower likelihood of unemployment is borderline impossible. If you have any evidence to suggest the converse of what I've posted is true, please do preset that.

I'd put my brother-in-law's intelligence as a master electrician up against 99% of the students graduating with philosophy degrees. I know he's making more money than them, too, and he got paid while he learned in his apprenticeship. No loans to pay back.

Maybe if your education was worth anything you'd have learned to think critically and that correlation is not causation.

How many of those people have jobs related to their degree? I'd argue that the reason unemployment is lower for people with degrees is not that a degree has added much value to their employability (it certainly doesn't for many degrees), but that the people who are able to complete a degree are generally more employable.

Also what is the drop out rate? I know at my school it was something like 66% for fresh/sophomores, so much of the money spent on education went towards people who never earned a degree.

Many degrees are terrible investments. I believe that psychology is the most popular undergraduate degree for example. It's also one of the worst degrees to get a degree related job out of college (I believe it's like 30-40% get a degree related job).

Even if that's what you did, your more likely than your colleague who only has a high school diploma to find some work even if it's outside of your field of study.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

My salary and the fact I have time to get on here are all I need to know it was worth it.

Irrelevant. The fact that their more likely to be employed is all that matters for my argument to hold true.

    Also irrelevant.

True. And you could get your PhD and teach. Luckily I got my Masters in Econ and Finance. Those degrees are very much in demand. I have not been unemployed for a single day since getting my degrees. I got laid off once, but there was enough notice. I got a sweet severance package and never missed a day. The hours are good and pay is way above average. It's possible I could be making just as much with my high school diploma, but it's also very unlikely.

I never thought of the GI Bill as 'snobbery' but apparently believing that people should have the opportunity to go to College is considered that in Santorum's mind.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with intelligent Adults having the foresight, knowledge and experience of LIFE, telling Children who lack the foresight, knowledge and experience of LIFE … that MORE Education far exceeds LESS Education.

… and if they don’t believe you … try competing with individuals with advance Education and see who gets left behind.

The real Job number prove the facts!

WTF?! Having children at a young age and being materialistic is the last thing we should be telling our children.

    I have a better idea …

You teach your Children that College isn’t important and I’ll go with the opposite theory … and we’ll see who prospers the most!

Agree and disagree. Education and being educated is for everyone. Not everyone will become a professional or a professor, but the curiosity in learning and exercising your brain is something that everyone should do. The average American reads 1 book a year. 1 book. Why are we so shocked when we find out that unemployment is so high and that China is beating our ass?

Well this would be relevant if it wasn't for the fact that in the speech Santorum refers to, Obama said "This includes trade and manufacturing training"

Oops. Pure whackjobbery on Santorum's part.

It is no secret to me that republicans need ignorant voters, didn't expect though that Ricky will just come out of closet like that. That is why establishment is against him, you don't talk about the need for ignorant voters - you just cut federal financial aid and praise personal responsibility.....

I don't think reading books is the reason why we are getting beat by China. That's a very overly simplistic conclusion.

Well, if you believe that college students being more likely to be employed proves that college causes students to be more employable your statistics professor failed you at least.

At least part of your education was a waste (assuming you ever took statistics).

You've only got snide remarks and empty rebuttals. There is absolutely nothing to back up your implied argument. Unless you have something to dispute it, having a college degree means you are significantly less likely to be unemployed.

Now put up something that refutes that, or shut up.

No ... less education places you to the back of the line.

You don't need statistics for that.

    Don't be stupid ...

I'm hiring SW Engineers and DBAs ... so who do you think will get the job?

So I just had this conversation with a co-worker:

Me: "I'm trying to convince some guy on the internet that having a college degree means you'll make more money and have a better chance of being employed"

Him: "Ummm, that's pretty obvious isn't it?"

Actually, no. The desire to have all/most Americans go to college is quite noble and very far from snobbish.

Whether it's for everyone is another matter entirely. Another lame attempt to mischaracterize my argument.

Santorum's campaign just gets weirder and weirder. The ultimate populist.
