Rate shock: How ObamaCare is causing a surge in insurance premiums



Over the past couple of weeks, many insurance companies have provided guidance in their investor calls that premiums for insurance plans being sold in the individual market could go up as much as 50 percent on average.

One has to wonder how this is even possible when ObamaCare was passed under the promise of affordability and access. While some may argue that “rate shock” has become a mechanism for insurance companies to scare the market, the reality is that economics really leave the insurance market with no other choice.

ObamaCare requires insurers to offer benefit plans on the new exchanges that are relatively generous and would include coverage for maternity, prescription drugs and treatment of mental illness. These are clearly important areas to cover.

In order to get this level of coverage, however, many people in their 20s, who are used to buying basic coverage, will now be required to pay more for these required benefits in the exchanges. In fact, it is expected that more than 75-85 percent of individuals in this age group could end up spending more for insurance in these exchanges than they do currently.

What I can't believe is that so many people actually believed him when he repeatedly claimed Obamacare would save the average family $2,500 per year. Anyone with half a brain who listened to the provisions could see it was going to increase premiums.

With so many sheeple so easily led, America is finished.

Its gone up way more since obama took office. way way more.

 

Only 5% of the population gets insurance through the individual market. A market that often offers crummy coverage and lacks consumer protections (both of which distinguish it from the group coverage most people are used to).

The difference now is going to be that this small segment of the population, and millions of uninsured folks who will be entering the individual market for the first time, are going to have access to benefits and protections that most families already enjoy through their employer-sponsored group plans. Most of the bite of the premium adjustment for the small percentage of people affected by it will be taken out by a mix of subsidies and risk adjustment. Meanwhile, people under 30 can still choose to buy crummier, less generous plans if they want to take that risk.

 

Obama promised us up to a 3000% drop in premium costs.

My companies premiums have went up:


2009 - 14%
2010 - 17%
2011 - 9%
2012 - 15%
2013 - 8%

That is a total of over 63% since Barack Obama took office... add that to the $4 + Gasoline... and the increase in food prices. He is crushing the middle class.

That is just more proof that Obama and his cronies did not do their homework prior to passing the mess call ACA. Insurance isn't the problem and the increase was just reflecting the increase in MEDICAL costs (before AMA). Obama needed to address the high medical cost if he truly wanted to help the people......but, as usual, he addressed the symptom and not the actual problem and in the end, he is making things much more difficult for the middle class.

 

So many right wing lies surrounding ACA.
It's pathetic.

 

So can you back this up with real hard facts?
or is this just more of the blundering blather coming from the right that we have all heard and are getting sick of?
"bankrupting" back that up with the exact policy that has been put into place by Congress.
