The idea of government encouraging marriage is just for that reason to promote child bearing and the distribution of property rights. Since gays cannot reproduce among themselves there is no reason for the government to encourage them to marry. There is no worry of who their child belongs to or what property they are entitled to since they will never be.

We could put the issue before every state today and see if the large majority of Americans currently in favour of equality is reflected in every state, but that is now moot. The Court has affirmed the equal rights of the individual.

Whatever may or may not happen, oftentimes doesnt change the fact that 2 Men or 2 Women cannot procreate with each other.

As such homosexuality, in itself, is a Dead Ender. Lets not try and rewrite the obvious please.

Except that for people who believe in the concept of Marriage and Family....Homosexuals dont fit. there was no reason to include them .

The decision went your way, regardless of what people like myself think. I think it was the wrong decision of course...but whatever. You now have that legal recognition.

I dont see how Humanity can score a Victory through a Dead End lifestyle being Validated...but to each his/her own. You're entitled to that belief.

Anyway, Honest and Sincere congratulations to you. (Thats not sarcasm)

Just this week? Erm... Try 2012. But no one is claiming a reasonably red state like North Carolina sports majority support, we're talking national support.

No I followed you just fine.

Do away with government recognized marriage all together.

If you don't believe in the institution then don't take part. Go get married in your church and leave the government out of it.

That's the line that gays have been fed for decades.

No ones stopping you from having your ceremony at your church. No ones stopping your family and friend from recognizing your ceremony.

Because gays have always had the same right as everyone else.

republicans would lose that fight, cause children can't give consent

course some heterosexuals marry children today, so it is legal, but by the above I assume you mean children under the age of consent

    http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20510475,00.html

pretty sad the above was legal but same gender marriage was not.....

The point is that at least 31 states have voted it down despite your claims.

Don't you mean that Scalia no longer has meaning?

Have some jiggery-pokery, SCOTUS-care and applesauce for dinner.. you'll feel better. ;)

it wasnt a bigger margin because the 14th obviously didnt say what one side kept telling us it did. (As stated here many times). If it did...it would have been 9-0.

Like in Louisiana where all but one abortion clinic was closed.

You don't have to encourage or support it. The SCOTUS doesn't have that kind of power. They just decriinalized it.

What now? Now people who love each other can legally get married. Why would anyone be against this?

Except that again and again these ideas have been proven wrong in court and today is just one of those.

Gays are marrying, having children, adopting, starting families and living just like everyone else.

    That's the victory today.

You could argue that the discrimination was justified, but it is real discrimination. When you are treating one group differently than another, that is discrimination by definition.

I discriminate against NAMBLA, for example. People discriminate constantly every day, even liberals.

If the majority really doesn't like this, they can amend the constitution and override the supreme court. If you do not think you have the popular votes to make this possible, then that is evidence that the majority does not agree with you.

It's as normal as interracial marriage was when it was legalized. It is as normal as black people voting when it was first legalized. "Normal" does not mean what you think it means.

How many people have agitated to be able to like gum? Have you seen a movement of millions of people agitating for this?

My point is that what you are describing is not an objective norm. Your own ancestors would be horrified to think you engage in oral sex and that this is normal in our society. They would have condemned your behavior as perverted and unnatural. Were they right?

Society has already spoken. This is how we want our laws to work. If the majority really doesn't like it, they have recourse...they can change the constitution. Lets see if that happens.

I think it is mostly gloating. For me personally, I use guys like you as a platform to expose flaws in the logic of your side of the issue. Your arguments are not logically consistent. You want a "norm" imposed even when the majority does not agree.

If you completely ignore all the social and monetary benefits of legally recognized marriage, then yeah, thats whats left.

You say that as if we can't do both.

The "extra robe" was appointed by Reagan. Not sure if you knew that. Let that sink in for a minute.

Just like normal people know the mouth is not a sex organ, amirite?

I guess it's really fortunate for us that we no longer need to change your opinion to get what we want.

It wasn't a larger margin because four of the judges don't want to apply the constitution equally to some americans.

And what justification would there be for not calling it marriage?

    - - - Updated - - -

Laws against closely related couples marrying are all about procreation.

Except when the people of Maine and Hawaii voted for legalized gay marriage? Oh yeah you selectively forget that right?

Because rights aren't put to a vote. That's what makes them rights, you have them intrinsically.

Those stories were fake. If you read the articles, he never even implied he would set himself on fire. "Burn" was obviously a metaphor.

No, you are not required to marry a person of the same sex or a different race under the Court's rulings of an American's equal rights under the 14th Amendment.

It only guarantees your freedom to do so if you want to.

Procreation is not necessary for marriage. Never was.

That has always been your argument and it failed.

Paternity? Doesn't matter because procreation isn't necessary for marriage.

    You lost.

And how many states has it failed? Miserably, or better yet. Put your big boy pants on and hold a national vote in 2016?
