A good supplemental Medicare plan is far superior to any single payer plan. The kicker is, it's not free and you have to have worked to earn it. One of the best plans I know of is the Retired Military Benefit Plans. All it takes is 20 years of service. After that, you can see any doctor at any hospital or doctor office for free. No deductible for anything.

Single payer? Wouldn't work here. Not only would it bankrupt the country but people here, especially millennials who demand everything instantly would have fits waiting weeks for routine doctor office visits.

Medicaid is free for some and there is no waiting. Just give all your money away and the government will take care of you.

 

Exactly, healthcare spending as a percent of GDP hasn't grown very much which shows that this "extra spending" on healthcare is more of a reshuffling of costs. The subsidies and expanded Medicaid replaced personal spending on premiums, out of pocket, and healthcare debt.

 

Most of the debt increase was due to decreased revenue, rising cost of existing programs due to more poor and unemployed and an aging population, and stimulus spending combined with the bank and auto-industry bailouts. That 1,400B was actually for the 2009 fiscal year which was budgeted under Bush and the deficit was already rising under him thanks to the recession and the bank bailout. With our debts the way they are we can't afford to lower taxes and can instead look for reforms to reduce wasted money due to the government and healthcare and cutting spending.

 

If that is your problem then what we need is a big spending cut not a tax break.

You never acknowledge the fact that the 161 billion figure you cite does NOT include the costs of the Iraq or Afghan war, or that the 2009 figure does count it.

You also deliberately ignore that people were singing up for unemployment, food stamps and medicaid at the rate of 750,000 a month during that period when the financial collapse of Bush's pyramid economy took root.

Then you go on to credit the surpluses that existed at the end of the Clinton Adminstration to Gingrich (who had resigned in disgrace the year before the 2000 election).

It's not surprising that you try and mislead by deliberately understating the size fo the disasterous defecits Bush ran, fail to acknowledge the causes, and ignore the fact that the critics of Bush's tax cuts not only predicted these deficits, but that their predictions came true right away.

It is odd that when Clinton ran surpluses, you try and credit someone else.

I've always wondered what sort of tortured rationalization you're going to offer for the the fact that the Congress you give credit to for Clinton's surpluses was almost the exact same one that rubber stamped Bush's tax cuts bill, creating deficts as far as the eye could see.
