Even if there is no formal apprenticeship, very few people at 55 have the ability to pick up a new skill. I taught computer studies (databases, spreadsheets, word processing, CAD) to adults for about fifteen years and a lot of them resented it being "too complicated" and just didn't have the mental energy required.

Dude, I'm about to retire from my second career and begin a third part-time career of welding at age 64-65 (currently 62). Yes, if I'd been an idiot and blew all of my money on "stuff" with no savings to live upon, it'd be very tough. As it is, I planned ahead and can live on my life without working again if need be, albeit with a budget and very few extravagances. The main point is you don't have to start over like an 18 year old. There are opportunities as long as you didn't completely screw yourself for one reason or another...then it's a tougher row to hoe.

when I first met my wife was satisfied with her vocational certificate, I told her she was too smart to stop there, I even offered to pay for her uni education, she refused...but over the years I've encouraged her to upgrade her education and she has, one business certificate at a time... she's risen from lowly admin assistant to CFO of a medical institute and a six figure salary. I'm very proud of her, she's very smart but she required encouragement and support to believe she could do it.

I did. However, as you are alluding, it depends on the skill. Additionally, it depends upon how long it takes to form a career out of it. Learning welding is one thing, aeronautical engineering another.

You didn't answer the question so there is nothing to comprehend.

My daughter got a university business degree and is a commercial banker. She supervises a dozen bank reps handling loans for $25m and up. $$$$. She and her hubby (he was a commercial banker and now does startups) have taken it to the max. Good on them.

I can understand that, kids have grown up with the technology so it comes easier...for us old geezers it's a huge technological jump, very frustrating, not impossible but difficult...it's like learning a new language, much easier when you're young...

    Yes, it becomes ideology-driven paranoia.

Yes, very true. I started working with computers in the 1960s. It's been pretty easy to keep up because I started young.

'Every business' already does, and always has. The only reason you don't know about it is because most business people prefer the money. Therefore it doesn't happen often.

it's something you should absolutely be afraid of, fascism creeps in very slowly until it's too late to stop it...pursuit of absolute power! talk of imprisoning politcal opponents! the media is the enemy! your friends are now your enemies! your dictator enemies are now to be respected friends! us against them! targeting minorities as vermin! ...we've seen this movie before all the signs are there, it's the road to fascism...

my parents who lived in pre war europe would recognize it in a second...

I've refused to do business with the socially intolerant and repugnant, employees and clients, morality will always be more important than money...

No it is not violence against violence. Its violence against speech. The antifa types go to events that are to feature a conservative speaker, or any speaker they disagree with, and start a riot to get the event cancelled. They seek out rallies, marches, and protests they disagree with and attack them. They instigate the violence to shut down speech they disagree with. This is what the Nazi brownshirts did.

The idea that intolerance should be met with violence is foolish and dangerous, I don't care who came up with it. It has no place in a civil society. In a civil society ideas compete with each other using words not weapons.

Oh for sure. I'm keeping a close eye on the rise of the Authoritarian Left, as are those of us on the left who remain liberal. Compelled speech, silencing of dissenting voices, Blasphemy laws, etc. Not to mention the heavy propaganda being perpetrated daily in our 'news' and other other media. Terrifying business.

Meantime, my parents (in law) lived through much worse than pre-war Europe. They actually escaped Authoritarianism, in order to access a free and liberal state. They know exactly where the trouble is going to come from.

And they think the Fascism is on the other side. Incredible blindness.
