Of course they would. People had no idea of how things happened. Some nut saying that Thor made lightning with a hammer or Zeus threw thunderbolts was a good as any
And then most people got taught that from an early age, and if you were stubbornly skeptical they burned you at the stake

There IS the way religion can help you with the "spiritual" side of existence, and some people come to that sooner or later, but most don't. Defying the fairy story is just too scary, even nowadays.

Oh, I don't know, maybe by calling people who think promiscuous women are "sluts" "insecure" like you did a few posts up?

And you don't think society's attitude to promiscuity has any effect on this at all?

Well yes, of course there was a reason. People are always wanting to know where thunder comes from and how the world came to be, particularly our place in it and how we can improve that. And all we've had to answer that up until about 500 years ago was the babbling of madmen. The rivalries of these various crazies are the warp and weft of history as well as the main reason it took so long to invent science and begin to find out why and how the world works in actuality

Being insecure isn't shameful though. It's bad "mental hygiene" but it's not immoral

The people who made it up were just babbling nuts. The people who used these babblings to explain the world usually made themselves or others they worked for very powerful in so doing.

Sure, it could be a factor in some cases. Twenty years ago I’d have agreed with you 100%. But the fact the correlation of negatives remain even as social acceptance of such behavior increases to the point many believe the behavior is a desirable trait makes me think there is more to it.

Also, if I remember correctly, a lot of the research has been done in societies that do not have the history of judeo/Christian or Victorian attitudes towards sexual behavior.

I really don’t care what people do. It’s their business. I just find it odd when threads go on for 30 pages and multiple posters who constantly invoke “science” on other topics participate, yet never mention any “science”.

BS, the doctor ONLY needs to know if the person is sexually active.

Women do NOT have to report the number of sexual partners they have to anyone.

BS, the doctor ONLY needs to know if the person is sexually active. ..which , if they have an STD obviously they are so even THAT is a pretty stupid question for a doctor to ask.

Women do NOT have to report the number of sexual partners they have to anyone....and THAT is what I was discussing with another poster..

I certainly support my right to speak truth as I see It, and shame those who are a detriment to society, as do you/

I would agree. It is also the kind of thinking that gives liberals their conformist appearance. Shaming is the primary tactic in building a society.

It is the principle of deferment of gratification. You give up a little pleasure now to attain happiness in the future.

And do not conflate pleasure with happiness!

If you came into a massive fortune, you could buy a lifetime supply of heroin and thereby maximize your sensual pleasure. But would you?

I've seen the game played out in real world situations. It is quite possible to plant ideas, behaviors, and memories into large numbers of people. Not everyone falls for it though.

If people were truly equal, there would be no peer pressure. Peer pressure is used by authorities to control the masses. In high schools, the administrators and teachers promote certain students, as a way of gaming the natural peer pressure tendencies of adolescents. Most bullies tend to target non conformists. Mostly, it seems to me, because that is just a natural inclination within the conservative mindset. However, bullies sometimes get their noses bloodied.

It is not an either/or equation. One can have quite a bit of happiness and pleasure throughout one's life and still have plenty left over for the future.

I have a low opinion of a woman who has had dozens of sexual partners. But that is a character flaw I have no desire to discuss with her. I would not “shame” her.

Nothing is more boring than discussing someone’s sexual preferences or history.

If you had your choice of two women, equally smart and beautiful, would you prefer the one who had five sexual partners or 50? I’d lean to the one with five partners.

But I would not “shame” the one with 50 partners. I’d just have nothing to do with her.

I don't know. It was literally just about the first conversation I and my future wife ever had. Literally about 30 minutes after we first met. In many ways it was a bonding experience. Discussing an important issue that was relevant to us both. Also by getting it out of the way extremely early, it enabled us to set firm boundaries in our future physical relationship so that neither of us would make the other uncomfortable.
