Obama inherited a safe, stable, and secure Iraq with however Iran peering over the border. He gave it away by pulling out all of our military, intelligence, and governance personnel against the advice of all his senior defense and state dept officials. The lessons of history - Europe, Japan, and Korea post WW2 were ignored by Obama either because he was a moron (he didn't know what would happen) or for political reasons (he knew what would happen and accepted the loss of life as justified).

 

Obama should have left ~ 25,000 troops in Iraq which is the same number as are in South Korea and Japan and about half the number in Europe. The troops could have been drawn down from all three of those locations.

 

Everyone says soft targets. You have no idea what they are capable of without sending one of their troops. They ally with crazy people who were just waiting for the nod of approval. You then can’t necessarily say Iran did it because you will have no evidence. Just a terrorist group claiming responsibilit.

Does killing Soleimani positively impact the situation? Will his death disrupt their plans as Trump claims? Would killing a U.S. general slow us down?

Killing Soleimani clearly negatively impacts the ability and risk for Iran to continue their state sponsored terrorism.

 

So, the Iraqi Parliament just voted to have all foreign troops leave the country. Guess that's one way to disengage from the Middle East.

 

Exactjy. Soleimani was the terrorism leader and the number two government official in Iran who set the entire international and domestic terrorism doctrines of Iran. Trump was brilliant to kill him and to then provide a list of 52 Iranian targets (which Iran will have to defend) if Iran retaliates.

 

That vote has no legal binding according to the WSJ.

According to the NYT, it must be signed by the PM to have effect. However, since it was the PM who drafted the resolution and presented it to Parliament for the vote, he's "expected" to sign it.
Apparently, the Europeans who also have contingents stationed in Iraq are in favor of remaining, in order to continue training Iraqi forces to continue the fight against ISIS. What fight against ISIS? My understanding was that we'd destroyed ISIS, along with our Kurdish allies, which then enabled us to allow the Turks to invade Syria?
