It's 'interesting' that a possible 200,000 death toll related to a virus gains so much attention, when the ongoing catastrophe of poverty is accepted as normal.

    https://soapboxie.com/social-issues/Poverty-Kills-More-People-than-either-cancer-or-heart-disease

Poverty Kills More People Every Year Than Either of the Top Killers -- Heart Disease or Cancer

874,000 People Died from Poverty in 2011

Obviously the well-off are concerned by this pandemic; but calls for a return to "business as usual" ought to be condemned outright, given the above figures.

Had we followed ALL of the recommended Pandemic precautions and protocols then the 1st would have all but disappeared by now.

However the capricious reopening of the economy prevented the 1st wave from fully receding which is why it is still around when the 2nd wave started.

In essence reopening too soon enabled the 2nd wave to start on top of the first wave which is why we are seeing what is happening now.

While I agree that poverty is a killer that is not the topic for this thread. Yes, it is shameful that we have a greed obsessed elite that are one of the primary reasons why we have such a pathetic response to this Pandemic however those are topics for other threads.

Actually it is on the way back now

our real issue is the lack of tourists but for the young that may be offset by seasonal work not being done by backpackers

If mask wearing was made compulsory from day one with thorough instructions on how to use a mask I think I would have accepted no lockdown. (That with recommended sanitization and no mass gatherings such as music festivals)

According to the article, apparently the border control doesn't really test crossers and they're apparently claiming essential status so....yeah.(Another big reason why 'essential' and 'non-essential' is a ****ing joke.)

Agreed that mask wearing should be compulsory and together with Social Distancing and Sanitizing combined they can make a huge difference in containing the spread of the virus.

Instead we see people ignoring both and the tracking numbers have once again started to climb.

Yes, it is possible to have an economy during a Pandemic but it requires DISCIPLINE to ensure that those 3 elements are adhered to by one and all.

It only takes a single Covidiot to start another hotspot and we have an oversupply of Covidiots.

According to that article, apparently not well enough. The article did show some maps and we do know that Florida/Arizona have become hot spots of recent days.

Florida is over 1000 miles away from the Mexican border! The lengths you're going to shift blame onto Mexico!

yeh... with Qantas sacking 10,000, the ABC sacking 240, Woolworths replacing 700 workers in Sydney and Melbourne with robots, etc etc and a second covid-19 wave in Melbourne likely to shut pubs and restaurants again.

Pathetic response. Our real issue is the disgraceful level of homelessness (c.100,000 BEFORE the pandemic hit) and youth underemployment of 14% before the pandemic... and unemployment expected to be 7% at the end of next year.

And how can people with no money find seasonal work?

    Go back to sleep.

Hasn't anyone here heard of "don't shoot the messenger, shoot the message." I posted the article, if people shoot the article that's fine but I'm not blaming Mexico, per se. I'm saying that this might be a yet underlooked factor, one that people never wanted to consider in peace time anyway but especially now with the coronavirus it appears that certain political groups have to be protected from being examined as a possible cause for the uptick.

That's interesting, and I'm sure there is some truth in it, but doesn't explain the entire recent spike in cases. I like the concluding thought that we should open up field hospitals in those border towns (and they may already be planning to do so).

I'm not sure "border crossers" alone would cause much more of an increase which would be higher than the normal undocumented migrant residents who live here illegally. They use emergency rooms as their first stop for any medical needs, and have for decades. Combine border crossers coming and staying a few nights at their relatives' homes here, and would be an increase in cases and hospitalizations in the Hispanic community.

The article indicates that the number of "Unknown" Race/Ethnicity indicates undocumented migrants. I have wondered why there are so many "Unknowns"...22% in Texas. Not sure that is the correlation, but it is one possible explanation. And it's still unclear why they wouldn't still report "Hispanic"....except that some citizens might question why Hispanics are 60-95% of total cases in some of the border communities.

This is Texas' Race/Ethnicity breakdown of cases:

    upload_2020-6-27_6-53-13.png

Still, I think the majority of the increase in cases (in Texas, at least) is from reopening bars and restaurants and having the 20-35 year age groups stopping at those establishments before and after attending protests over the last 30 days.

My intention is not to let this pandemic pass without the public learning vital economic lessons from it.

If poverty is maintained by the same "greed obsessed elite" responsible for the poor response to this pandemic, guess what we need to do to enable a better response to the next pandemic....

Actually a virus that had a decent kick in its tail (like the 1918-19 flu which killed 20 million, when the global population was only 1 -2 billion, would have bankrupted the entire fraudulent, global, privately-funded debt-based economic system by now (except maybe China, whose government I presume can write-off public debt issued by the Peoples' Bank of China).

Your intentions do not give you a free pass to override the forum rules.

Please start your own thread regarding your topic because "economic lessons" are OFF TOPIC in this thread.

I'm amazed - you think counting covid deaths (so far miniscule cf. the 1918-19 flu) is all that is consequential in this thread?

Guess why the WHO is underfunded, and health systems around the globe are underfunded with disastrous outcomes.
.....and why the arguments are already beginning over whether private companies should be able keep exorbitant profits from a vaccine development.

    Geez..

    Oooooh! Such negativity!
How can people with no money find seasonal work

same bloody way immigrants with virtually no English and a very limited budget do now

I work rural and remote and I am telling you there are jobs out there. We might see more young people hitching rides and travelling but there is work still around IF you are willing to get out of the cities.

And those same "immigrants" with little English (students among them) who could not return home before the borders closed are now reliant on food kitchens and charity in the cities because their casual work has dried up and the government refused to include them in job seeker and job keeper programs.

I'm not interested in a repeat of scenes from the GD.

    Go back to sleep.

Tony and the MSM spread falsehoods and propaganda ALL THE TIME. Many understand that, but many more don't understand it and never will.

Good Heavens, the media retell that lie about the events of 11 September every single year. You still believe it. I don't because the facts don't support the narrative. Neither do the facts support Tony's narrative.

It makes perfect sense once you understand that the masses respond predictably to having lies told to them repeatedly over time.

Basic Goebbels strategy. It works very well.

Even though documentary proof shows the virus to have been engineered at Chapel Hill, the masses believe it was caused by Chinese drinking bat soup. Speaking of bats.... ;)

Why is that ONLY those that BELIEVE in crazy conspiracies "KNOW" the "TRUTH"?

For the same reason that those acolytes of the MSM, the believers in Official Conspiracy Theories "know" "the truth"?

Those who accept without question the statements and pronouncements of known liars are not special, they are a dime a dozen.

What the authorities tell them becomes the truth. It's how the herd behaves.

When you have to WORK this HARD to convince YOURSELF that YOU, and ONLY you, are the ONE who "knows the truth" and that the ENTIRE rest of the world are ALL in some GLOBAL conspiracy that is WHEN it is time to acknowledge that you no longer share the same orbit as REALITY!
